Thought this may be of interest to some? Only my views / impressions so hardly definitive.

Interesting read!

I always had the same feeling with the E39 M5 and the E60 M5, could imagine the Alpina E39 even more so.

Wonder how an E60 Alpina B5 or B5S would compare to the E60 M5.

I do wonder that also, but given how few touring there are, it wasn't really an option.

Begs the question; why did you buy the M5?

Simple. I wanted a fast estate and that ticked the box. the more I drive it, the more I like it.

I tested the B5 and the E60 M5 back-to-back on the same day. The B5 was nowhere near as much fun as the M5. Its handling felt less exact. The autobox dulled the experience. The supercharged V8 was a torque monster, but couldn't match the excitement from the V10.

I had the chance to own a B5S I found it to a very good car a more relaxing car than the M5 more along the lines of the E63 but I wasn't looking for that type of car at the time I wanted something a bit more lively so I chose the M5 it was a bit sharper handling wise, the ride was softer it did seem a bit more special inside than the M5 overall I'd say if I'd chosen the B5 then I'd have probably kept it longer than I did the M5 but I did have some fun in the M5.

they're both great cars but for different reasons
