Help with buying a car from Evans Halshaw

Evening all,
I'm really struggling here and I'm looking for advice. Last Saturday I went out looking for a car and saw a used Saab at Evans Halshaw Motherwell so decided to go have a look.
It had just been taken on trade in and still hadn't been through the valet bay, checks etc. It's a Saab 9-3 1.9 diesel vector sport. 2008 model with 61,000 miles on the clock. Service history up to 2012 but nothing in the book after.
We had a chat and agreed a deal that saw me pay a £100 deposit towards the £5550 price. Having previously heard about the £99 admin fee, I swiftly had that removed. I've arranged to go back down this weekend to see it after prep and have a test drive.
They've offered me a two year warranty at a cost of £399 which I've agreed to in principal. I need a warranty as I'm not in a position to shell out hundreds if the car has a major fault. I'm in the Air Force and need the car to travel home at weekends to see my wife and wee boy.
I don't know but I'm not getting a great feeling. I have my fingers burnt before and maybe it's just nerves? I've read the horror reviews on the Web but I wonder how many people have good experiences but don't post?
I had hoped that buying from a big deal we would give me confidence in the car and the service they provide?
I know the Saab (in general terms) has its faults and maybe that's another concern for me?
Am I just being stupid or is there a sixth sense kicking in telling me to walk away?

Why would you buy a used diesel with no service history for the last two years?
Why would you buy a Saab who have gone under?
Walk, walk and walk further. There are thousands of cars for sale in the area and even ignoring all of the above, your gut feeling is not happy so that is the warning you need.

Is it in their runabouts section? Judging by the mileage and age it probably is, wouldn't touch it, these are all the scruffy cars they can't sell as a proper used car forecourt vehicles, there are usually intergalactic mileage stuff and like 03/04 plate f
ked Corsas/Fiestas in that bit to give you an idea of the quality.
Also my boss had a 1.9 TID Saab 93 and had a load of faults with it, gearbox, DMF, inlet manifold, EGR valve. Its a Fiat/GM engine used also in Vectras and Astra Hs and if you google faults on 1.9 CDTi Astra/Vectra you'll see just how troublesome they are.
Also Evans Halshaws customer service once you've bought the car and they've got your cash is as bad as Arnie Clark's so I'm told.

How much??? I am about to trade in my 2008 (facelift) 9-3 vector sport estate and am hoping to get £3k for it. You can have it for £3500 if you want it. It has had a new water pump and timing belt late last year and a new alternator last week. It has 92k miles, full leather, factory sat nav, parking sensors, heated seats etc.
My cousin bought a car from there. They did everything
Bent over backwards the full shebang to get the sale
Oneve the sale went through car broke down in its first week
Due to fuel pump failure. Didn't take warranty but you get 30 days
From a dealer when you buy from them. They did everything to avoid
Taking the car to fix it tried putting it of and off and service was horrific
So took car over and dumped it accross the entrance to the showroom
And refused to move it until they delt with it. Salt in the wounds she
Threatened with going to the consumer rights ppl and gave them the
Car back
Went to klassics in coatbridge and got a great service and a better car
At the same price

Evans Halshaw are part of Pendragon, he biggest dealer group in the UK.
They went through a torrid time, but now are on a sound financial footing from what I can see.
For people to comment on individual deals & dealerships, where issues occurred, cannot and does not reflect throughout the group - Same goes for Arnies.
Why the fk do people in this forum find it hard to work out?

Because of numbers - the number of punters that have been shagged by Halshaw or Aronld speak volumes.
listen to those with tales of woe - they dont make it up and they are ordinary people that have been rough rodded for the sake of a few pounds. hard earned cash that they have worked for and been sold pups. So anger is there. its not a case of getting over it but a case of being angry and disappointed.
Buying any car read the forums and do the research. As for the OP a saab at over 5 grand and has two years of service history missing ? should have walked. plenty of metal out there at that price with checkable history and in good nick. Due dilidance. The likes of Arnold and Evans is that they rely on divs being easily parted from their money.

ks - Remember that if 1 person is unhappy - they will tell 100 others, if 1 person is happy, they will go about their daily business, and tell no one.How may people do their research on internet fora - loads - even my missus is switched on to this, a scary thought
Please share your story on how the "Big" dealers have ripped you off.
Evans Halshaw (aka Pendragon) are not the largest in the UK because they are rogues. Arnies are not the biggest family owned car dealership in the UK (and Europe I think) because they are run by a bunch of charlatans.
I do agree that the odd fanny of a salesman or sales manager will provide bad service/lie through their teeth/rip off customers, this is not the norm though.

I can sit here and trawl the internet and find loads of issues out there with Arnold. And the way that some have been treated. Think that you need to open your eyes to some of these people and the issues that they have had as they have been pretty hard done by. I know that not everyone is squeaky clean but the amount of stories and the amount of dishonesty that is out there is really an eye opener.
Personal dealings with them ? I did and I regretted it.

As for Arnold Clark - Id not by a coffee from them as ive heard someone say they are incompetent dangerous and generally aerses....
As you say trouble with the internet is that people go on and say when things don't go well - generally this is the case with AC things don't go well.
The incident that I was made aware off - guy buys car and it has issues with the suspension. They have it in for a while try to repair it and then get it back not running well - conks out AA come and they recover it. somehow its had petrol put in along with a few hundred miles of road testing carried out over a few weeks....
In all honesty the dealings Ive had with AC myself were poor. If it had been an isolated case then fair do but well it wasn't by all accounts. That's the trouble with the internet it lets you identify rogues and bad service. Friend a car rental from them - conked out and recovery come in and they find that the fuel pump wiring has been bodged - recovery guys comments the cable used to hard wire it was a death trap. So where was the quality control there ? okay maybe someone had 'repaired' it outwith the dealer scope. however it was hired from them.
Once bitten you tend to not want to get bitten again and if a few friends let you know and you read it then you tend to avoid getting bitten yourself.
