I'm somewhat shocked that nobody has posted about Sundays TG.

The main stay of this episode was a battle Down Under between a new Bentley Conti (4.0 V8) MY14 Nissan GT-R & a BMW M6 GC (CP).

I was somewhat surprised whilst at the same time delighted to say the M6 won. In the 1 mile drag race the M6 came 1st, the Conti 2nd & the GT-R 3rd. Brake test saw the M6 come 1st, GT-R 2nd & the Conti 3rd. Hill climb up an ore mine saw the GT-R win (with the Stig driving that car).

No doubt some of it staged but it was a decent enough & highly amusing episode so well worth a watch.

I was shocked myself but then I seen there was a small discussion on one of the (many) M6 deals threads haha.

I really enjoyed the episode and loved watching the M6. Brake test was the most surprising for me! considering the bentley had ceramics!

Yep M6 looked good, but also pretty obvious how much it struggled to put the power down compared to the others. Guess that's the way M's are heading generally now, as physics is pretty much dictating that the power gains are undermined by limitations on traction

Although once rolling the M6 was noticeably faster with similar power to the GTR. This must partly be down to loss of power through the 4WD system? Not sure on the technicalities behind it but understand with 4WD you have power loss over RWD/FWD?

1. Yes 4WD will have a bit more transmission loss
2. The F1X M5/M6's power figures are conservative (allegedly)
3. Captain Slow was in the GT-R

I am still a bit surprised the M6 pulled away like it did though.

The brake test surprised me too, seemed a waste of money to go for ceramics.

Didn't Clarkson use manual mode whereas the others didn't? Plus he turned off the traction control and things. I wonder if the outcome would have been different if he'd left the default settings on. It was also the only 4 door.

Personally I preferred the Bentley but not in custard yellow, plus it's £60k more than an M6 before any discounts. With discounts it's about £90k more. Crazy

A single stop from 60 mph is not going to show any difference between regular and ceramic brakes, it may even give an advantage to regular brakes if they were stone cold.

The advantages of Ceramics are :

- Much better at resisting brake fade on repeated stops.
- Much lighter so reduce unsprung rotating mass.
- Last much longer, so although they cost more up front, over the life of the brakes they are not much different.
- Pretty much no dust.
- Don't rust and cause judder if left wet for a couple of days.

I wouldn't go that far. The M would defo walk away from a GT-R once rolling but the clever tranny & gadgetry in the GT-R mean no M could take one off the line. As above although the gap on track & likewise the twisters ain't huge, the M would not get close enough to execute an overtake. The GT-R really is an exceptional machine.

Having owned one I still much prefer my M5 but the R35 was funsmile

5th gear is so much better as top gear is now a family programme.

He did the first run in full launch control - and the car virtually went sideways rather than forwards. It couldn't put the power down at all so he put it in manual mode to see if that would help!

Interesting. I'd still rather have the M6 than the other 2 regardless of price.

The M4 will apparently be on this week's programme...

I need to try me one of these Launch Controls. May need a bit of instruction though as Jeremy's version doesn't appear to be correct.
