After yet another episode of driving that ~18 mile stretch of 50mph SPECS-enforced roadworks between the M25 and Fleet concentrating more on my speedo than on my surroundings - is there any way to tell for sure that a SPECS camera has zapped your speeding vehicle (regardless of whether you receive anything in the post)?

Is there a flash?

If not, how do they work in the dark? Infrared? Relying on streetlights?

No flashes, every camera should record your car, and then they compare notes.

I have seen them lit up with floodlights in the camera area, or infra red lights mounted next to the cameras.

In the dark you can see the violet glow of the infra-red so can tell which ones are turned on. Trouble is you've no idea which ones are linked and it's not necessarily the one after the previous one ... best stick to 55mph all the way through them imho.

Really? I'm hoping that's poetic licence rather than the literal truth.

We've got a similar length sketch on the M60 / M62. It's very easy to drive it when free flowing amd whe. It's not then your speed is more or less irrelevamt. I'd suggest going back to driving school if you find it difficult.

No flash.

They can use IR or street lights when it's dark. They always use IR to determine your registration number though.

You can be reasonably sure of knowing they have caught you by knowing that you have exceeded the limit between them. Alternately, don't speed between them and you will know you won't get caught.

If you have to concentrate on your speedo by omitting to observe the road then you need to take remedial action before you damage yourself or others; take it immediately.
