Hi everyone, I'm new to the forums and just looking for some advice.

I'm in the middle of voluntarily terminating my hp agreement on my current car and have been to look at a used car(2 years old £20,000) at my local vw dealership. I test drove the car and spoke to the dealer on the phone the next day but I wanted to check the car over and let my girlfriend test drive it before I made a decision but he wanted a £500 deposit over the phone, which I agreed.

Anyways, when we went back i noticed the tyre tread was non existent on one tyre and low on the other 3 so I asked for them all replaced. The salesman said I'll see what I can do. After hearing nothing I got in touch and told me one tyre was replaced and the other 3 have 3mm of tread remaining so they don't have to change them. I told him I wasn't happy spending £20,000 (screen price, no discount) on a car with barely any tread on 3 tyres which will need replacing in a month's time. I also have the safety of myself and a 10 week old baby to think about. The salesman is going to speak to his manager today.

Would I be entitled to my deposit back seen as though I paid over the phone and signed no paperwork?

Thanks in advance

Yes you should be able to get the deposit back. How is 3mm of tread a danger to your child?

Just so you know, there will be other parts of the car that is part worn, this tends to be the way with cars that are not brand new.... crazy eh.

Just make a decent brand of tyres a condition of the sale of deposit back.

I change mine when they get to 3mm anyway.

If its an approved used car this is very strange. I Bought my Jag and more recently my Merc from dealers under their approved schemes paying around £15k per car. Both came with brand new tyres all round they also replaced the disks and pads all round on both cars. Apparently this is part of the approved scheme requirement. They both also came with brand new MOTs and a service before I collected plus a full diagnostic print out.

If you are paying £20k you should expect all the above as a minimum but just make sure they dont put ditchfinders on.

I'd rather have 3mm tread on a decent tyre than 6mm on a cheapo chinese ditch finder which is all they're going to fit if they replace them wink

Just remember, tyres only need changing at 3mm when you have taken your car in for a service, not when you are buying it.

Thanks for your replies. I would be more than happy to get the car providing the tyres are replaced, and yes I do know that every used car will have worn parts but on a £20,000 car with no discount off it, I expected better from a main dealer.

IcI've always been told to change my tyres at 3mm too, as stopping distance and chance of aquaplaning is massively increased. Hopefully they won't want to lose a sale over the price of 3 tyres which will cost them less than half the money it would cost me to replace

Don't let a good car go, because of a set of tyres. They'd only replace them, with the cheapest ones they can find anyway.

Since they agreed to replace them earlier, I'd be asking for a bit money off the purchase price, so that I could go buy the tyres of my choice. Ask for £400 off but be willing to negotiate down to 200, if you have to.

£200 off a set of four new tyres, is better than nothing.

I was in a similar predicament, when I bought my current car. The dealer wouldn't replace them and they wouldn't budge on the price. In the end, I decided it was silly to let a good car go, for the sake of a set of tyres.

They're going to fit the cheapest tyres available and they may even be worse than the low ones which are on there.

They should at least have changed both tyres on the axle.

Weird. Audi put a full set of SportContact 5s on my car when I bought it, and just this week did the brake fluid service for free as I only bought the car three months ago and argued that it should have been done as part of the 145 point inspection. I'm surprised VW are making it more difficult.

Yep, I'd rather have 3mm on good tyres than 7mm on ditchfinders.

If it's on 225x40x18s as many VAG products are, you're looking at £500 for a set of decent tyres.

If your happy to pay full price then it's either already cheap or its something special, negotiate it into the price or suck it up, they will only put the cheapest landsail / west lake / ling long tyre on possible so go and get a proper tyre fitted with what you save

i agree with other posters, they will fit the cheapest tyres possible, far better to try and negotiate some discount and get some decent ones fitted yourself

i'm surprised you managed no discount at all on a 20k car - get anything else thrown in?

I suppose 4x matching practically new tyres ought to go pretty well on eBay.
