I keep hearing that the Tornado is ageing and due for replacement.

What is this replacement? Surely not the Lightning II?

Can you still buy F-111s biggrin

If I remember rightly, it was mentioned on here in another thread that some squadrons will be disbanded and the rest as stated above will get F35s.

Why would you want to replace Tornado GR4 with F111 when the latter was:

a. A generation earlier.

b. Far less capable.

Id ugrade the GR4s with that sexy fuel burning trick...

If F35 continuex to go behind schedule FCAS could be the successor!

Because as a child, my favourite aircraft was the F-111! I think because it bombed Libya.

Isn't the Typhoon now configured for ground attack tasks as well?

I had a fair few holidays in Norfolk as a kid - stopping at Lakenheath on the way up to watch F111s come and go was even better than crabbing at Blakeney!

Yep. F35 is (eventually...) going to provide CAS.

The original plan for the replacement of Tornado was the FOAS (Future Offensive Air System) programme, but this was cancelled back in 2005, and replaced by the DPOC (Deep and Persistent Offensive Capability) requirement programme, which in turn was then cancelled in the SDR of 2010, leaving no other option than for the F-35B to share some of the GR.4 roles with Typhoon and any UCAV programme.

Typhoon and F35 ...

the priomary difference between the tornado fleet and the typhoon fleet is the typhoon is truely multi-role rather than having sub fleets optimised for couple of different roles each.

The F111 didn't really hit the mark on any level.

I can remember seeing a patch on an American pilots flight suit just after those air strikes with a picture of a F-111 with L.I.B.Y.A around the top and Lakenheath.Is.Bombing.Yo.Ass. around the bottom.... after a brief tussle it ended up on our badge board! biggrin

The Tonka as it currently stands is way more capable than the Lightning II that's scheduled to replace it. However if you look at it when it entred service late and over budget it was far from perfect, nearly 30 years of upgrading have seen it develop into one of the best multirole strike aircraft. Let's hope that the Lightning takes less time in post production development before it's a great aircraft.
