A couple of days ago I unpacked a box containing all my model aeroplanes that last saw the light of day 19 years ago.

Amongst them was a Vulcan which during my early teens I thought was an amazing model however on getting it out of the box it turned out that when I was younger I wasn't the great painting-master I seemed to think I was smile

I toyed with the idea of re-painting it and improving it but I think the 12 year old me would have hated future me to mess with such a genius piece of modelling.

So, I've bought myself another one.

It is the Airfix XH558 version but there is a few problems that I can see.

I could make it as the kit suggests but XH558 doesn't have the ECM cooling duct on the tail. This isn't too big an issue as I could just leave it off. What is bugging me is that the kit has the shorter jetpipe exhausts for the later 301 series engines, XH558 has 201's so has the longer narrower exhausts. I've read before that a resin conversion kit for the 201 series exhausts is available but no-where I've tried googling seems to have them in stock any more.

That leaves another option, make the kit as a 301 series engined aircraft. The kit I've purchased only comes with decals for XH558 but again, Googling suggests that you can purchase decal sheets for different aircraft but can I find any available?!

Any pointers in where to find the resin modifications or decal sheets?

Or should I just stop thinking about it and get on building the thing? smile

Just build it - preferably in Anti-Radiation white.

Hannants website is a good source of accessories for kits. There are quite a few Vulcan decals sheets about so you can pick a Vulcan 2 from any era in any colour scheme.

Freightdog did resin engine/exhaust conversion parts, but I guess it'll be a case of checking EBay if they're no longer available.

How confident are you about modding kits? Obviously you've got to start somewhere, but you have to ask yourself if you think that you can do major surgery on a kit and end up with it looking better than a non-accurate un-modded version.

I remember seeing a conversion of this kit to a B1 displayed at Telford. It was pretty impressive considering the work needed.

It arrived today and looks simple to build but probably time consuming to get right.

Unlike the P-51D which also arrived today where the instruction sheet was blank smile

would recommend the flight path add on kits. There are so many things you can do to the vulcan kit.

I have a skybolt version and one to finish that has stratch built bomb bay and some of the flight path stuff on it.

The Freightdog Olympus 201 and 202 jetpipes are still available from Hannants:

Alternatively I believe the Wolfpack parts are 200 series:

None of those parts are showing as in stock currently, even though you can add them to your shopping list.
