Took it into my local camera place this morning. They said they had never had a problem with the D70's flash before and would have to send it off.

I declined as i'm off to the Autosport show and am taking pics for a mate.

Anyone know how long it would take for the camera to be sent off? I don't fancy being without my new toy for a month or so...

Do i have any chance of getting a replacement while mine is being fixed?

Given the short period of time since you purchased the camera, I would have been been looking for the camera to be exchanged.

If the camera shop are being arsey about it you could consider claiming on your/your mum's credit card. I'd see this as the final last gasp option though.

Usually about a week for a warranty repair. It can't be that old, maybe the distributor will just send you a new one. Remember to take any cards or batteries you own out of the camera first !

Thanks guys

Ollie - that would be awesome. The NEC is well lit so i won't need the flash i hope...

Others - I'll be trying to get a straight replacement when i go back in. I bought the camera to take pictures, if i don't have the camera due to fault, i can't take pictures... therefore its not fulfilling the reason i purchased it.

I'd be a little wary of leaving it for much longer. There's usually a 14 day 'cooling off' period whereby if the camera fails due to a manufacturing fault the camera will be replaced no questions asked.
Given that we've had quite a few Bank Holidays over the past couple of weeks or so - time when you'd not be able to return the camera - I think it only fair they replace the camera.

For the period thereafter that 14 days you may have to send the camera back to the manufacturer at least once for them to attempt to repair it, therefore being without the camera for a week plus.

It broke on saturday night. I'll be taking it in on monday, which is 9 days after the event.

I explained the situation to the guy that i had to go to the Autosport show and he said that was no problem and to bring it in the monday after.

I might be wrong but I think your statutory rights change if you accept a repair - that is, if you allow them to repair it this time, you have no right to a replacement in future.

Again, that might be wrong, but if it's correct, you might be better off demanding a replacement or refund. The item is clearly faulty, I don't think they have a leg to stand on not replacing it.

I didn't 'accept' their offer of repair as i said i couldn't do without the camera.

I'll be going in on monday with the intention of getting a replacement or a refund.

Fingers crossed for an easy outcome

Ah, fair enough, obviously I didn't read your posting properly!

Good luck - I'm sure you will have no problems getting a replacement.

Read this

www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/cgi-bin/calitem.cgi?file=ADV0043-1011.txt

and then

www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/cgi-bin/calitem.cgi?file=ADV0050-1011.txt

and then

www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/cgi-bin/calitem.cgi?file=ADV0054-1111.txt

Then go and get your replacement or cash/creditcard refund... (and print them out just in case - you'll be amazed what happens if you get to an impass in the shop, and then, in a projected voice, say... "hmm, I hear what you are saying, but this trading standards advice sheet says that you are incorrect and are trying to take away my statutory rights. I'm not sure that you really meant that, did you?"
