I've got the 40d Msport and am thinking about changing in the next few months. Anyone else moved to the new model, and moved up/down the range? How does the e70 40d compare to the new 50/40/30d?

I'm very tempted by the Cayenne (and possibly a petrol), but the toys and space in the e70 are tough to beat.

John, I've got the 2011 e70 m40d. Mpg varies massively depending on how we use it. For school run/town driving, it's about 19-20mpg and for motorway runs, it's mid to high 30s (if you're lucky), all very approx. The average at the moment is reading 22.9 mpg.

The fuel consumption is not bad considering the fairly good performance on tap and the way we drive it.
You thinking of swapping the m6? Surely not!

I was thinking of buying for "general use" for the wife, but she is giving me some stick over the size of the car.
The M6 Gc Cp is mental quick, so far my licence is "Clean" but for how much longer cry

My next car will be the new 7 series M50D M Sport (if it comes out) or the M3.

Depends on lots of things really, that new 7 series is supposed to be 200 Kg lighter so should go well and a bit more understated than this M6 GC CP (which everyone wants to race every day!!!!)

I drove the latest model 40d - my neighbours, and have the prior model (as does he). It seemed more refined, more spacious, more updated tech but I have to say the drive seemed a bit dull, somehow less "connected". With my current model a 40D M Sport we had the sports suspension deleted. The new model didn't and the ride seemed much improved. I can't see how anyone could need the pace of a 50d unless money is no object when the 40d is so rapid and you don't use the pace it can achieve 80%+ of the time. I'm sure that's the head speaking though smile

The x5 is a great car for the wife and general family use. My wife said that she'd never drive something as big as the x5 (coming from an old e46 325i), then fell in love with the e53 that we had. Now she won't willingly drive anything else - she loves the elevated driving position and the convenience of optional extras like the "HUD".

Know what you mean about "M" - even my humble f10 attracts a silly number of racers trying it on. Can't imagine what I'd replace it with. It certainly wouldn't be replaced with a diesel - in my experience so far (which is of 30d and 40d only), they just lack the soul of the petrol V8, even if they have the pace with their turbos.

Size of the X5? Here's an anecdote...my wife was worried about the same thing. She is nervous, particularly reversing and parking in any car but particularly in a new car. We have had the X5 for a while and it had to go into the garage for a week. They loaned us a 3 series. She found it harder to park! The x5, being so high with such a great view and with cameras at the back and top view (in the mirrors - so you can get a top-down view, an essential option in my view) you really can't go wrong with parking it. She loves it and I think would find most other cars a challenge to park after having this.

The sports suspension is a bit too hard on the e70 riding on 20" alloys. It's just too easy for the car to lose its composure. So, that's good news about the suspension on the new model.

I also wonder about the point of going from 40d to 50d, though the 50d that I've seen in the showroom looks quite sexy. Our 40d is fast enough for such a car, I'd say. Aso, is the mpg on the 50d good enough in the real world to justify going for such a car instead of a petrol?

Yeah, forgot to mention the love that the wife (rightly) has for the amazing cameras. You should've seen the havoc when our i-drive packed up and she didn't have the cameras!

I agree on the "Surround View" I have had it on all my last cars were it could be specced, it's a must have IMO.

I've a 2015 MY m50d. I traded in my 2007 E70 30d which I owned happily for 7 years.
If you want a SUV then this is one of the best. Great performance, handling and when needed the economy also. There are certain nice options such as surround view, especially if you're new to bigger SUV's.

When I was looking, I treid also the Cayenne, Macan, X3 even looked at RS6's and m550d. The X5 ticked all the boxes I needed. After now 15k km I'm still very happy with the choice.

My understanding is that the 50d is the same or similar mpg - the engine size is the same you just have an extra turbo, I'm not expert but it surprised me a bit too.

Just looked at your pics in your profile, looks awesome - love the colour although our current space grey does it for me to as does Carbon Black (I assume yours is Sapphire Black?)

So in answer to all of you, except my dear personal troll Killysprint :-)
I have saphire black which is nice but mine was a dealer car so it was already specced. The carbon black would be my preference. I have seen a few and its very nice with a sort of grey blue hue.

Real world economy is way better than the 3.0d E70 where I got about 25 mpg. I average between 7.5 and 9.0 l/100km about 30 to 38mpg. If I'm in the mountains in sport it drops to about 25mpg but in average I'm at 34mpg. For a 2 tonne car with 381ps its quite amazing.

The 4.0d is more economical by about 5% but you get way more power and torque in the m50d. Drive both and you would never choose the 4.0d, and as killysprint said I'm even a tight arse as well.

Now thats good and I would be happy with that MPG for such a car.

Agreed - that is good mpg. Might to have get a test drive in the 50d.

Sapphire Black looks great - same colour as my m5 (which I love). Same colour as my old e53 x5.

I've got carbon black on the x5, which I like a lot, but I think that I might go for a colour which is easier to keep looking clean on the next one. Grey or Silver probably.
