I like the concept although I suspect the devil in the detail will prove it difficult to achieve.

One of the tunnels is only 500 m long, or something silly. If the whole network could be opened up it might work. And you'll have to share with pedestrians - the tunnels aren't THAT wide.

The pictures made it look idyllic but I did wonder about the width of the tunnels and whether it would just turn into another traffic jam.

I can't see how getting the bikes down, along a very indirect route and back up again would be any quicker than the streets. Since speed is all that Londoners seem to be bothered about, I just can't see it.

Now, convert the entire Tube network...

Indeed. Any saving in time would be negated by the upping and downing to access of such.

With 4 million passenger journeys per day on LU, one can only imagine if they all took to cycling the network.

As a sometime cyclist I'm interested in speed for sure, but I'm also interested in staying dry, not breathing in diesel fumes and not being run over by traffic. Utilising tunnels like this solves many problems, with the obvious proviso that they go places people want to go.

You could put the diesel traffic in the tunnels, that way you'd remove the fumes and the risk and be able to cycle around in the daylight.
