For those who understand auto electrics, please don't laugh.........

If I wanted to install a switch as an added security measure to prevent my S3 from starting, does it matter where in the circuit I put it?

The reason I ask is following my recent discovery that a bad earth attached to the rocker cover is clearly sufficient to prevent the 2.9 engine from roaring into life!!

Not really, so long as you interrupt the current flow in one direction or another. If you wanted to be really clever you could switch the current to the starter and the low tension to the coil separately so it won't start unless both are 'on'. That way, if the scum bag finds the the one to the ignition switch and it won't start he (oh, sorry he/she) might give up and move on.

With two switches you could imagine you're firing up a Lightning or something laugh

Thanks for that V8S4me!

Like I said, as an 'additional' security measure ;-)

Much appreciated.

....or fit an imobiliser that will do it automatically rather than have to remember to flick the switches everytime?

Perhaps I shouldn't tempt fate but I've been following this Forum for a year or two now and can't recall anyone ever posting that they've had their car nicked scratchchin

I think Renault tried it in the '80s, but it was always going wrong.......

I have central locking on the V8S. The usual TVR lash-up; crude but effective. The door card is off so if you want a photo I'll post one up later.

Got it on my S3, thought it was standard. It's now operated by the alarm I fitted along with remote boot release.

I fitted a security switch to my MGB in the '70's: a hidden changeover switch that took the ignition feed from the key switch to the horn instead. It never worked in anger, but did once or twice when I forgot about it!

I'm fitting a 'cheap' ebay central locking system.....

you could fit a 'push - on / push - off' button switch behind a panel, so you just push on the face of the panel (possibly the one next to the drivers knee that moves easily.

Central locking kit available from Maplins for just over £30 (http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/central-door-locking-system-yd77j). Looks the same solenoid as the boot too. I have in the past seen these with key fobs on flea bay. One of the Hants 3000S has fitted these after his passenger door lock barrel failed as it was cheaper than replacing the lock! Works well.
