Hi all,
Looking for views on whether it's worthwhile changing my car. Currently have a Volvo s60 d5, 110k and it's probably worth £2-2.5k. I bought that for my commute which at the time was 30 miles each way mostly in stop/start traffic across town. My new job involves a commute of about 10 miles but in the summer I aim to cycle to work.

I'm wondering if now is the time to downgrade my car to a petrol worth £1k. Preludes, pumas and mx5s appeal. I'm looking to buy a house so a small cash injection is always useful.

What are the thoughts of the PH collective?

Dunno, but I'm just starting to look for an S60 D5 so we might just possibly be a marriage made in heaven! (no, seriously, I am!)

"Better the devil you know"...it's not a big difference in price so I'd keep it unless you think there are major repairs coming, or unless you're really desperate for the extra £1k for your deposit (in which case you don't really have a choice!).

You can't really go wrong with a £1k mx5 though, they rarely break.

You CAN go wrong with a £2k s60 d5 however, excellent cars but complex and parts are pricey.

If you want to change for something a bit more fun to drive then go for it I reckon.

That 1-1.5k saving will all but disappear by the time you've found, taxed, insured and sorted out niggles on your new purchase

if you want to minimise outlay keep the volvo.

If you want an excuse to buy an mx5 then its a plausible line to feed the missus so you should get away with it

I cannot believe you are being told to keep the Volvo and not get an MX5, what's happening round here confused

I'd keep the Volvo.

And get an MX5, it's the PH way.

That's my worry, to be honest. Although tax would work itself out given the new system.

The s60 has a decent size boot but a relatively small opening. I can rope friends with vans in for moving big stuff smile

This. Always this. It's (almost) impossible to save money by buying a new car.

All of that said, as long as you dont change with any expectation of actually saving money overall, then obviously changing from a diesel Volvo to something a bit more fun is the right answer!

Puma with the arches done and the suspension bushes replaced, it's one of the most affordable fun Ford's you can buy.
