Does anyone here have any experience with this transaxle on a high power/high torque motor?
I have heard anecdotal stories of this box unmodified (2.7 diesel derived??) of running and surviving >700BHP on slick tyres with no problems.
I haven't heard anyone quoting torque figures but I'm told there are people in the states running up to 1000 BHP through one of these boxes so the torque figure must easily be 650+ lbs/ft if true.

Have a look round GT40s.com. They are standard fit to modern replicas now. I understand they are rated to 450Nm but will take a lot more if not abused. There are a few variants - 2wd/4wd etc, the 2wd is usually classed as the strong box. There are upgrades available for them also - advanced automation I think in the US?

the O1E is the 6 speed box
the O16 is the 5 speed box

there is 2 variants of the O1E that are found in the Boxster S as used in the 986 and 987 variants of the Boxster.

CMS lists a Billet side cover to fit both the G96 as well as the G86 so it suggests that the differential may be the same, they are both made be Getrag as OEM.

i am not sure what the differences are between the G86 and G87 though

Have one for my project
Rated to 450Nm, although live with 550 apparently.
Depends how it's driven I think!
Certain models had wider 1st & 2nd gears, mine included.

Mine came from a Passat 2.5TDi, 6 speed, DQS code.

Only real downside is they can't be run inverted, so crap driveshaft angles if you're trying to get the engine low
