My budget is ideally around 1500 quid, but could probably push it to 1800 for the right car. I ideally want something small and quick.

I was thinking:
Clio 172
Focus ST 170
Audi A3 1.8T
BMW E46
Lexus IS200

You guys have any other suggestions? I am in the SW so please keep that in mind, Im not trying to drive 3 hours for that cheap of a car!

Cheap Civic Type-R EP3?

Bulletproof engines, likely to be more reliable at this pricepoint than most of the above options?

£1800 ep3 will be a shed with quite a few miles, the clios are generally hit and miss with whether you get a good one, I would go for the best 306 gti6 you could find in budget and spend the rest on maybe a suspension refresh.

I bought a CAT D cosmic grey EP3 Premier as an all rounder with 60k on the clock for 3.5k. Not very refined, but reliable and good for thrashing about whilst being quite practical. I stuck a could of winters on the front and see's me through winter no problem.

It is a little bit noisy due to an input shaft bearing issue but doese't effect the drive in anyway. I am fortunate to also have a barge for distances and days when I cannot be bothered with the EP3.

Clio will be fun, not sure what type of daily you're after though? If I did much motorway/dual-carriageway work I wouldn't want a Clio as a daily.

The focus will be reliable but they're gutless, poor on fuel and have horrible gearboxes smile

Honestly I wouldn't touch most of your selection at that price range, you could get a seriously tidy 106 GTi for that though?

The Lexus wouldn't be particularly quick (certainly compared with the Clio), though it might be a fairly comfy thing to travel in.

Anyway, I'd go for a Saab all day long in this sort of price bracket. Wouldn't really matter what engine, most are reasonably quick and nice to ride in on a daily basis.

Alfa 147 twin spark? You can find a nice one for a grand and spend the other £500 on unleaded. Admitted not as quick or nimble as a Clio 172 but a nicer cabin and a comfortable enough yet sporty ride providing you have the right tyre/wheel combo.

Stretching the definition of quick a little bit but defeinitely a very fun and nippy car and great on winding roads with corners, Suzuki Ignis Sport:

Your budget could get a really good one (mine is great and was <£1400)

How about a little Seat Ibiza from the turn of the century? One of the turbo ones.
