My in laws are 80 years old and want to replace their old Ford Fusion Auto for a new car.

It must be easy to get in and out with higher seats. Auto, petrol, cheap to run, light controls, no complicated tech.
Suggestions please.

A taxi.

I'm sure that it would work out cheaper for my parents to use the local mini-cab company than try and keep two cars on the road.

My folks (similar age) replaced their Saab 9-3 turbo with a Honda Jazz. They love it.

I have relatives the same age and they recently bought a Kia Venga, sitting position is good and it's easy to get into with decent space in the rear for shopping etc.

What sort of mileage do they do in a year ?

Do them a favour, when they have chosen the car:

Work out the cost per mile over the next 5 to 10 years including depreciation, insurance, repairs and the like, and suggest that actually, it would be as cheap to get a taxi.

I have successfully achieved this outcome with my Grandad (RIP) and my father in law, one of whom should never have been given a licence in the first place, (but got a full one, before they had a driving test), and the other who was struggling with driving at night, or on busy roads, with the agressive nature of other road users.

Given that my father in law had spent about £1.50 per mile over the last 10 years, when you added it all up, he came around to the fact that in making use of his free bus pass, using taxi's and occasionally obtaining help from his family (who all live nearby) he'd be much better off mentally. And safer too.

Not saying your 80 year old drivers are struggling yet, but you should have the conversation and work out the cost, so they can make a better decision about when the time is right.

I know a guy in his late 70's who drives a STI Impreza which he had fettled by Litchfield because 'It didn't have enough poke'. I aspire to be like him when I'm 80.

Went through this with my parents.

A Nissan Note works perfectly , especially for getting in and out as the seats are quite high.

Just because they're 80 it doesn't mean they're over the hill and shouldn't be on the road, or shouldn't want a car even if it works out more expensive than taxis. You'll change your tunes as you get older.

The Nissan Note is probably the most similar thing to the Fusion in concept but, if they're familiar with Fords and their Ford dealership the B Max is a good bet and has the sliding doors for getting elderly friends, large garden centre plants and other stuff into the car in tight spaces.
