Nice view and good food London/Essex - suggestions please

well it's the old man's birthday soon and we're after recommendations for a restaurant with (preferably a nice view) and (obviously) good food/service which isn't wallet raping (will be a Saturday)

Looking as a steakhouse or Indian (I know there's quite a difference!!). He doesn't particularly like fish, Chinese, Thai or Italian. Current fave is Hawksmoor @ Spitalfields followed with after-dinner drink at Tower42 (which covers the 'good/great view' aspect)

I recently went to the Oblix bar and restaurant on a Saturday night for an occasion. Great food, good service and the best view around. Not too pricey either...

ignore poster above, oblix is rubbish, so is hutong.

can't think of somewhere with both, galvin at windows maybe but food isn't grest

No don't. Check out their website. I went at Christmas and it was very good food and service

Yeah, it was st. I only recommended it because I own it / it was all a dream / I wanted to see the OP go out and have a terrible meal.

Maybe in future people should just send you a direct message asking your opinion?

Before it all kicks off...

City Social - Tower 42 - Very good Michelin starred food
Sushi Samba - Heron Building - too noisy
Duck and Waffle - Heron Building - good food
Fenchurch Seafood Bar and Grill - Havent eaten here though i hear good things. The view south of the river is incredible.

OP there are much better restaurants in London at ground level! I recommend getting drinks at the top of somewhere and moving on to a better choices elsewhere for food.

to be fair that was where I was leaning - T42 seems to cover the drinks and views bit, then off to some good nosh

can't disagree with that went a month or 2 ago and it was lovely, just got to try and persuade my sister to leave London lol

Husband and I recently had a fantastic meal at the Nag's Head, Brentwood. Don't know about the view as it's on a major road, but the food was utterly superb, they had a very good wine list and the whole thing came to about £100. Three courses (including the chateaubriand which was the most expensive thing on the menu and totally worth every penny - best steak I've ever eaten!) plus a bottle of decent wine.

I'd highly recommend it - not exactly fine dining, even though the food is fantastic, but a really nice place.

The views are great there's an Aston Martin garage just up the road.

I'd suggest here is a good shout. Great views. Also worth noting you can get into the bar for a drink without a reservation so you could pop up for a cocktail, enjoy the view and then eat somewhere else if you wanted.

London-Le Pont de la Tour has views of Tower Bridge and Oxo Tower is worth a look.

Essex-The Labworth on Canvey Island has a decent reputation or how about something in Old Leigh-your sister could jump on the train at Fenchurch Street Station

London: Radio bar has a nice view, it's a bit Poncey though and tricky to get in on a Saturday.

If it was me I'd prefer a nice pub with a river view?
Have a look at the Maybush in Waldringfield or the Butt & Oyster in Pin Mill, might be a bit far for you though.

Don't bother going to Vojan, it's not great and pretty expensive. Smiths is excellent and the doorman on a Saturday evening never fails to amuse me.

fair play to my sister she's come up with what looks like a cracking suggestion "The Bleeding Heart" (http://www.bleedingheart.co.uk/crypt/)... ok so no view there - that's the idea of going to T42 for afters
