Having sat in a new merc today and looking at the lovely interior, as nice it was, I wonder what new car I'm going to buy when I have the means, that will tick all my boxes?

I'm a fan of proper connected steering, hardly any assistance (I have ABS but would be happy without), and a raw feel. Is there really anything you can buy that offers those? Electric hand brake, electric steering... Just don't do it for me.

I'm sure it'll only get worse and there's only so long one can go on buying older cars.

Thoughts?

There is a huge classic car market for a reason.

My point is more than if you want to buy new you have to accept that you've given in to all the extra equipment. Buying something classic/used gets around this obviously, but again, it's not new

There's a delivery mileage E34 M5 for sale on Carandclassic. Perfect!

Was it a new C Class? They are lovely inside. Massively better than BMW or The last gen A4...

True, but that reason isn't because the owners of classics are buying their one and only car and that it "ticks all their boxes".

Until you see the COMAND screen tacked onto the dashboard like a £50 knockoff.

It's because they prefer older cars - which is where the OP is reluctantly being drawn.

Why is new so important ?

I've been forced to have two new (company) cars - the two most hateful cars I've driven.

Maintaining an older car is likely to be cheaper than paying for the depreciation on a newer one.

I'd bet that at least 90% of classic car owners don't use them as their main or only transport.

Depends on your definition of classic.

Over 10 yrs old and you'd be well out, over 30 and you may be right but the point remains that many people nieither want nor drive modern / new cars and older cars are perfectly able to do the job.

I know I could happily drive the following every day:

Sierra Cosworth, MK1 MX5, Lotus Carlton, Mk2 Golf GTi etc

Yep, my thought on classic would be at least pre 80s really, anything 80s/90s would just be retro and anything 21st century counts as pretty current.

I'm not saying older cars can't be driven every day, just that typically, they aren't .
