Does anyone have a spare shim? I did the first bank spot on first time, then got the last shim on the second bank and managed to sand off too much - even though I do it by hand with emery paper - Doh!

I need one that's 2.50mm or bigger, and would be happy to pick it up if you're within the M25/Bucks area.

Many thanks!

Sorry, I just checked my collection and 2.00 is the largest I have.

Thanks Peter, much appreciated. By the way what is the minimum recommended, quite a few of mine were 2.00mm or just under?

Not sure what the recomendation is. I was running my 4.2 with at least a couple of shims in the 1.6 - 1.8 territory

At this rate it will only be another 24k miles before I get to 1.60mm. Not ideal, and I don't want to suffer like djstevec with his failed shim. The only upside was that his oil pump drive failed at roughly the same time, so it all got fixed in one go.

If I'd known about the intake valve issues I would have replaced them when I had the heads off three years ago - oh well... (which would have worked assuming that the stems elongate rather than the seats deteriorate)

Just completed the valve clearances on mine, thinnest shim I have is 1.76mm so a bit left yet.
I only had to replace one and used TVR Parts, it arrived the following day. I did notice that the thinnest shim available from them is 1.47mm so I imagine that must be still a safe thickness.

Thank you for that, it looks like my AJP8 has 40k left in it before the heads come off again - and I REALLY HATE THAT JOB.

I made them last time I needed one.
All you need is a small bar to take cuts off and some case hardening powder?

Huge thank you to the generous PHer who gave me the shim I needed last night. Hope to have it all back together later this evening.
