Evening all..

still trying to diagnose my clutch / gearbox issue from last post and just to add to the confusion, My mechanic matey drove the 350i for approx 20 miles on Friday and it never missed a beat !!..

Went down to my car club meet this morning and nearly didnt get there due to gears crunching and not wanting to engauge any gear.. anyway.. i did get there, had a great time and then left to come home.. guess what, it was fine and issue free..

anyway. just a query.. do the 350i gearboxes have syncromesh ? and also, if the oil was to be replaced, would molyslip be a good idea to add?

Just wanting to try all the cheaper options first before going the clutch replacement route.
Thanks.

Dom.

Hi Dom, when I got my Wedge the gear change was bloody awful, most probably due to lack of use the previous 5 years. I followed Adam Q's advice and flushed the box out twice with white spirit and ATF and then when the flushing oil ran clear I replaced with Mobil 1 and molyslip. It has made a huge difference and in particular the baulking on cold mornings has completely stopped.

Re the gearbox I'm sure its synco on all gears, unlike my old Morris Minor!

No synchro on reverse but yes on the rest. Dom your problems sound more clutch-related. Maybe slave is on its way out? They often get intermittent before they fail completely.

Thanks for your replys guys.

Having a think last night Ive decided to get the gearbox oil flushed and new oil added with molyslip but also to remove the slave cylinder, clean it up and test it working whilst disconnected from the gearbox. hopefully this will help isolate the problem area.. the last thing i want to do is replace the clutch ( unless this is the problem)

If the slave has gone, are the Rover SD1's / land rovers the best replacement slaves for them ?

Now I have seen peeps say they use Mobil 1 - what type would be best suited the gearbox. I dont want to cause further problems by using the wrong type !!

thanks again.
Dom

Surely anything other than recommended fluids are a bodge and could cause further damage?..Im not a big fan of "Additives" I'm afraid..They are ALL temporary fixes...My gearstick is always stiff in the morning which is quite natural for a bloke..Its only a pain if you need a whizz....hehe

My gearstick yesterday morning took stiffness to a whole new level !! nearly had to pull over and call the AA out..

I'm just wanting to try previously suggested ideas to try and solve / diagnose the issue and lessen the symptoms before the possibly inevitable engine / GB out to inspect and replace bits..

This could be true but at the same time, the recommend oil would be 20+ year old technology.. surely there are newer oils available that would improve on the original in all round oiley performance ??

You want Mobil 1 engine oil 0 or 5w 40. With the Molyslip. Works a treat.

However your problem does sound clutch related. Change the slave and master and be done. They are both as cheap as chips.

Cool.

Master has been changed.. changing the slave is possibly on the cards..

Talking of cheap as chips... its nearly lunchtime and there's a chippy round the corner.. I'm off lick

Interesting I've never seen that strainer - I wonder if it's on the LR transfer box rather than the LT77?

As I have a Rangey one I'll take a look.

Yup, transfer box strainer!!

If you want a really good LT 77 gear oil try EVO 1 oil, this: http://www.difflock.com/oilsandadditives/oils/gear...

It does list it for the LT77 gearbox..94-97 but i have seen some threads on 87 defenders that use them also..It would be good to know if they are needed as i want to change the oil in mine soon...Cheers...Ziga

well I took an LT77 box completely to bits and there was no strainer like that.

Iv'e been under mine tonight looking for that plug that holds the strainer, nothing there, so can only assume there is no strainer on the this type of LT77 installation.
