Training after tooth extraction - advice plse
Discussion
Hi all,
Had a lower tooth out exactly a week ago. Was not the most simple procedure, took nearly 2 hours to get tooth and roots out. Been taking pain killers and antibiotics for the whole week. How long until I can train properly? ie. back down to gym for lifting weights/cardio workout etc.
I did a 20 minute run and did not feel too bad yesterday morning. What is the advice, lightly train? Do not want to disrupt the healing process, however itching to start training again...
Thanks G

Had one extracted last week. Little leaflet that i was given advised no vigorous exercise for 24 hours. I do not think there is a set time as it will differ from person to person.
With no complications I would think that a week is long enough, based on my utterly non professional opinion
I would just train and if it hurts too much or bleeds then stop.

Hi, not a dentist but had a number of extractions back in October 2014. I don't do weight/gym training, but swim, bike and run lots, so here is my expereince.
Appointment 1
Three extractions (upper left); came out reasonably cleanly (50 mins total appointment). I managed to avoid needing pain killers for these ones and was back cycling (gentle commutes to work) in 24 hours; running within 48 hours. I left swimming for just over a week to make sure the sockets had started to heal more fully (taught me to keep my mouth closed anyway!).
Appointment 2 (2 weeks later)
Two extractions (one upper right and one lower right); a bit harder to extract (more 'wiggling' needed on the lower jaw especially!)
Was in agony and needed painkillers for 48 hours (mainly to help sleep and the bruising that must have happened). I ran after 72 hours and again left swimming for a couple of weeks.
The key thing I understand is to ensure the sockets start the healing process (from the root up/down). It also depends on what training you are doing. I probably wouldn't have played hockey, rugby or football for example quite so quickly.
Hope this helps - good luck
Ironically I am now looking at the opposite....with dental implants, when can I start swimming, cycling and running!!

A week later? Train away no worries
The only reason you shouldn't do any exercise soon afterwards is so your higher blood pressure doesn't cause the wound to bleed. Other than that it's just a comfort thing.
We normally warn patients to take it easy the same day of an extaction.
Thanks Driller - I am assuming you are a dentist? If so, great user name!

I had to have some stitches, that should not make any difference?
Thanks G
Well technically it's milling so I should have chosen Miller and we do quite a lot of filling so it could have been Filler or Miller-Filler.
Luckily though we do use drills to prepare for implants so...
Sutures shouldn't make any difference, infact it will be less likely to bleed with them in. You might want to avoid grimacing from lifting weights so as not to put tension on the sutures but other than that should be ok!

Sorry to butt in, but are the sutures used for (lower) wisdom teeth extraction massive jobs that look like plague crosses on a door? The OH had them out last week and I'm not sure what we should be able to see. I was under the impression that I should only be able to see blood clots.
