Hi,

I wonder whether anyone can help me.

I have a Samsung D500 which can receive MMS and video messages. I am on O2. Now, I have set the phone up correctly (AFAIK) because I am able to send picture and video via MMS to a Vodafone phone. I am also able to receive pictures from another O2 phone.

I can't, however, receive pictures or video from the Vodafone phone. Instead I get an SMS text telling me to go to a website to view it.

My mate (the vodafone bloke) asked Vodafone why this was and they said that my O2 account needs to be "told" that I can receive pictures/video. I have phoned O2 and they are just trying to get me to set up MMS (which I have already done).

Am I doing anything wrong? Is there different settings for the receipt of MMS/video to those for the sending of it?

Sorry if that's all garbled - I'll try again if it is!

Thanks,
Phil.

You can request the settings be sent to your phone from the O2 website.... It's a doddle once you can find where it is hidden on the site. And no, I'm not looking for it for you

I don't think that's the problem.

I think the O2 content has decided that the handset isn't advanced enough to view this data for some reason.

Are you sure it's not 3G only?

I'd already checked out the site and they don't "have" the settings for the D500 on there (not available to be sent).

I have followed the settings presented for this situation (i.e. mmsc.mms.o2.co.uk, IP Address etc)... so the sending of MMS is fine (as is GPRS/WAP surfing)... it's the receipt of video and pictures from non-O2 phone that's the problem!

I wondered whether anyone else on O2 has this problem - or indeed whether anyone with Vodafone can send to O2/other networks.

That's essentially what I am thinking... but it, therefore, doesn't make sense that I can record and successfully send video/pictures to the "other party"! (which isn't 3G by the way)

As I understood it, there are problems with the network gateways. That might be old news, but the providers use different technology and have to convert the message. Could be old news, but the fact that your home network points to your phone configuration being correct.

I'm sure a telecomms analyst will be along in a minute to correct me if I'm wrong

Yes, I have the exact same problem. I'm on O2 and have a 6230 (fully video/mms compatable etc).

Anyway, my MMS is set up and works perfectly, I send and receive pictures to all my friends on different networks regularly.
However, when someone tries to send me a video I get a text saying that my phone cannot support what someone is trying to send me, and that I can view it online (which I then did...and they tried to charge me 50p to save it!).

The way the text was written was like (as said above) they had pre-decided my phone wasn't able to accept it.

One thought I did have is that the movie was taken on a Sony Ericsson, and I have a nokia. I know that Nokia movies are taken as (i think) .3gp files and perhaps the SE phones compress them as something different? (therefore it would actually make the network clever, so surely that can't be possible!)

Glad you posted this though - wonder if anyone with a techie mind knows the detailed answer.......?!

The 6230 is the Vodafone phone in question. He is able to receive and view my videos, just not the other way round. I'm assuming therefore that it isn't a question of file compatibility - it presumably has to be a network issue.

Here's hoping an expert comes along!

Well, I've found out why mine doesn't work!!

It's apparently because I have one of the "new" O2 phone numbers (i.e. the prefix bit is new) and the other network suppliers have not yet set this prefix up as a "valid" phone number.

It should be done soon (< 2 weeks) and should work after that!

Hope this helps anyone else in the same position!

i didn't understand that.......? What's your prefix? Mine's 07703 but that is yrs old (I had it when it was originally 0403).

So in a couple of weeks will mine start working as well?!
Thanks!

Ah. so the MSC and HLR/VLR (or indeed the WAG) are getting confused and defaulting to "minimum feature set but it'll work mode".

Ahh, well maybe it won't help you then. My phone number is only a week or so "old" (won't post the prefix on here if you don't mind - public forum/acute paranoia! )

ok no worries, but perhaps you and I have different problems then - like I say, my number from O2 is quite old so if there's any list type things they need to be on, I'd have hoped I'm on it!

I best just get trying/experimenting to try and work out when I can and when I can't

Thanks for your help

Which service provider do you use? I use Carphonewarehouse - their data support number is 0870 607 61 61. I took about 30 tries to eventually get through but if you are with them, they may be able to help (options are 1, 1, 1 so you don't have to listen to the annoying little bint circa 30 times!).

Thanks for the number but, alas, I am direct with O2 and so I go through to their select customer (I think that's what I am) line.

I'll give it a go later and see if I can suss. Will let you know what I find out, it may be of use
of course the chances are it will have no affect at all, but I like to try to help out now and then
