I bought a golf gti edition 30 about 2 weeks ago from a independent dealer. Since I have had the car found a few worrying problems with it. The rear right caliper is sticking and the front discs and pads are squealing really bad a friend had a look and said one off the discs has had it. Also I have noticed a knocking from the gearbox that sounds like a release bearing or input bearing also there is a high pitched whistle coming from the engine under under boost which I guess could be the turbo giving in or a diverter valve. I bought It about 30 miles away from my house and they won't look at it till wednesday I am guessing they will try blag me off as they were not very helpful on the phone. I have not drove it much what rights do I have If I am not happy with the car?

They wont give me a courtesy car and expect me to drop it off there and leave it there. Its 38 miles away from my house and I have no way of getting back and I won't be able to get to work for the rest of the week :/

Sir,
In law, you have every right to return the car and within a reasonable time period the dealer will HAVE TO address your concerns. If he fobs you off by telling you to pursue your claims via a purchased warranty, (either you bought it or the dealer bought it), he still is under an obligation to put right the faults. If, lets say, the gearbox/clutch has a fault, then he should contact the warranty company to put the matter right on your behalf. As you have only had the vehicle for 2 weeks, the law is completely on your side. If the whole situation ends up going down a legal route, then, sadly, you are in for a long haul. You could try getting the faults corrected by someone else and then presenting him with a bill, but he will not agree to you doing that, and if he does, then get it in writing.
If you allow him to take the car in to correct the faults - then he is bound to apply the cheapest route, (for him), possible. That may NOT be to your satisfaction.

Going to drop the car off there tomorrow and they will give me a lift back, not what I want but what else can I do?

All of the faults you have mentioned are wear and tear items; notably the brakes.

Did you not notice the turbo whistle when you test drove it?

Likewise the gearbox?

I assume you have a warranty with the car; let that deal with the faults. The dealer is, to my knowledge, under no obligation to provide you with a courtesy car?

The whistle could just be a split boost pipe not necessarily a turbo about to die.

Sorry OP, don't mean to be sound like a typical argumentative PHer but in what way is one of the discs visibly shot on your car?

Unless it's cracked then I can't see an issue. If it's just lipped/grooved then as long as the bulk of it is above the minimum allowable thickness then they're still usable although they might take longer to bed a new set of pads.

Squealing could be a multitude of issues, in fact the sticking caliper at the back would be my first port of call even if it sounds like it's coming from the front. It's most likely an easy fix and in need of a new set of sliders. Worst case is the caliper needs rebuilding with new seals which a decent mechanic should be able to do if the parts are available.

It might also be worth getting the brakes hot and giving them a workout, it may just be that the previous owner has minced around in it for its whole life and they've polished up. If doesn't disappear or it comes back after a few days then it might be that they've fitted pattern pads. Worn discs on their own is unlikely to be the cause of squeal.

As said, whistle could be a boost hose.

It all sounds like easy fixes, I'd have a go at getting the dealer to fix it but if he messes you about but you like the rest of the car and you got a decent deal then I'd just take it to a local mechanic you trust.

Thats what I think but surely they will get out of trying to fix that, I think when I get the car back ill get it over to r tech on the rolling road to check whats going on if they dont fix it.

'Warped' discs will cause judder, you wont be able to see it and it wont cause squeal! That said, if you're getting a set of discs out of it I wouldn't complain!

The turbo whistle could be the turbo itself, running without fault, mine does the same.
If the diverter valve was faulty, you would be losing boost steadily throughout the rev range. See if you can stick a boost gauge in it, or see if an app from your phone will do it, with a dongle in the OBD port.
The disks and pads, as well as the sticking caliper should be covered by them, and before setting off, see if they have a loan car they could give you.

HTH.

Squeaking while breaking might be a lack of shims? My 350 made horrid sounds when breaking originally, didn't have any shims, bought some for a few quid, greased them up and been silent ever since.

Its more of a hi pitched whine than a whistle, It did not do it when I first bought it. They will not give me a loan car :/ after I get it back will be taking it to a vw tuner and get them to check the boost and stuff.

Where did you buy it?

Someone's driveway, small indie, car supermarket or a main dealer?

Courtesy cars are nice. I would expect it at a main dealer. Anything other it would be a bonus.

Be careful having anyone else "work on it" - and certainly don't expect to recover costs if you expend any.

At a small independant they sell some top prestige cars there. I won't be mentioning their name yet will give them a chance to sort it out.

My Leon whistled/whined at WOT when the DV was torn to bits. They're about £30 to replace so hardly the end of the world, plus a very common issue with earlier revisions. Even easier on an ED30 where they're basically right at the front of the engine- you don't need to take the driver's side wheel arch apart to get at them.

Quick update they had the car for 3 days and fixed nothing and were really arrogant towards me. They say the is no noise coming from the gearbox which there clearly is also there is loads of play in the gearbox and using the clutch and letting off the power which I think might be a gearbox mount possibly.

You could pay for an inspection of the vehicle, they are not a lot of money and good evidence.

Advise the garage once you have this but don't let them have the report, they can pay for their own. If they don't want to play go down the small claims route.
