Just after a bit of advise people, for the last month or so, circa 2000 miles ive had a knocking noise which I thought was a drop-link & not over concerning, having just had the time to take a look it seems as though the rubber boot (cv joint??) is leaking grease/oil, i cant get it to a garage until at least the weekend & there saying it could possible be the weekend after he could fit it in, another 1000 miles possibly.

My question is, is this ok to drive on, most of my mileage is motorway commuting to work, not sure if it seems to be getting worse or it could be that im more paranoid of it until I can get it sorted,

Will this cause any drastic failures or more damage?

Car is a 06 Fabia Vrs 1.9tdi

I understand its important to get sorted asap & i am trying other garages in the mean time.

Many Thanks.

The rubber boot prevents dirt getting in to the joint, and the grease getting out, helping to stop the joint wearing rapidly. If it's knocking, it's already knackered. So you're looking at a joint, maybe a driveshaft, rather than just a gaiter.

When's the knocking? On full lock? Or over bumps? If it's over bumps, it's not the CV - may well be a droplink.

Great, many thanks, its both really, though ive noticed sometime it knocks on a smooth road, generally at slower speeds ive noticed it, also over bumps and it doesn't seem to make a difference whilst turning?

Find a smooth flat car park. Put on full lock one way and reverse, then change the lock to the other way and reverse. If it's not knocking then it's not the CV joint.

Check anti roll bar bushes, and ensure the bar hasn't moved and knocking on the subframe. Ensure the front wishbone rear bushes are not shagged. Place foot onfront wheel and push towards back of car. Should be a small amount of movement and spring straight back. If it feels floppy. Bushes are knacked.

Happened on a 2002 Ibiza, think you car is the same platform.

Shagged out CV joints tend to "click" on lock rather than knock about in a straight line unless its exceptionally screwed. Check the anti-roll bar mounting bushes for play - easy to do, have a look under the car, find the anti roll bar and give it a good wiggle to see if there is any play in it. Done a lot of VAG anti-roll bar bushes so quite a common part to replace
