"The Scottish Government has been urged, via the Public Petitions Committee, to officially recognise Flower of Scotland as the country’s national anthem.

The Scottish FA has been asked for its view and believes the answer should come from our supporters and, primarily, our most loyal fans - the Scotland Supporters Club.

We would be grateful if you could complete this short survey and have your say on the national anthem.

To partake in the poll, click here. "

Time to get the anti-English rant to buggery, and replace with something that represents the modern day Scotland of bravery and hope and Scottishness or something biggrin

Quite apart from the devisive lyrics, the tune (Flower Of Scotland) is a dirge, it might stir the heart of England haters but it is backward looking and negative.

I would rather have Scotland The Brave

Hark! When the night is falling
Hear, Hear! the pipes are calling,
Loudly and proudly calling, down through the glen.
There where the hills are sleeping,
Now feel the blood a-leaping,
High as the spirits of the old Highland men.

Chorus
(Towering in gallant fame,
Scotland my mountain hame,
High may your proud standards gloriously wave,
Land of my high endeavour,
Land of the shining river,
Land of my heart for ever, Scotland the brave.)

High in the misty Highlands,
Out by the purple islands,
Brave are the hearts that beat beneath Scottish skies.
Wild are the winds to meet you,
Staunch are the friends that greet you,
Kind as the love that shines from fair maidens' eyes.

Chorus

Far off in sunlit places,
Sad are the Scottish faces,
Yearning to feel the kiss of sweet Scottish rain.
Where tropic skies are beaming,
Love sets the heart a-dreaming,
Longing and dreaming for the homeland again

Snap!

I fear it might end up with 30% flower of scotland, and all the other haters split between so they get about 20% each, and we et stuck with an anthem the majority despise irked

Hang on, National Anthem? You are still part of the UK (little thing last year sometime, yes?). So you get the National Anthem of the UK. End of conversation.

What a simple way to decide it, I look forward to seeing that one enforced at the next Scotland Football/Rugby game.

It is more a sporting anthem than a national anthem really.

Anyway I voted Scotland The Brave.

Though the option of Caledonia was tempting I think Scotland The Brave is a more stirring song to be sung at sporting events.

Caledonia's an SNP song too, can't be doing with that. Although at least it's about Scotland hehe

I think we're often described as a family of nations, so national anthem is fair enough smile

Perhaps they view both the idea of a deistic supernatural being and a monarch with overarching power over a democracy an anachronism that shouldn't be given any credence in a modern society?

(I'm not trying to make a point, just trying to inject a bit of humour)

Have to agree that our anthem(s) is/are pish. I'm always impressed by the French belting out La Marseillaise, and then subsequently depressed by our dirge (both of them).

Can we also vote on what should replace God Save the Queen? The Pistols version would be better.

While it may not worry some, it could hold us up to a little ridicule that Highland Cathedral was composed by German musicians Ulrich Roever and Michael Korb.

yes i know that highland cathedral was composed by germans they have done scotland a service. I only came across it during the campaign and it just got the wee hairs on my neck up and the tears flowing. There is very few pieces of music that do that, Mark Knofler's local hero and Iron Maiden's journeyman to name but 2

as for GSTQ as long as the 3rd verse exists then I will never sing it but always boo it... saor alba

Surely all of Scotland wishes to crush rebellious Scots too?
