Thought I'd share this from Sussex Police. The moment a reckless motorcyclist Lee Oliver pulls a wheelie, loses control, falls off and rolls into the path of an oncoming van.

He had a lucky escape, but he's also got a suspended sentence and four-year ban from the roads.

Pretty crazy footage here, shot from both the biker and the van. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7CRuKv0DJw

Both Lee Oliver and Lee Cunningham recorded their entire journeys, as well as their speedometer. Oliver hit 130mph, while Cunningham hit 137mph.

Some people don't help themselves!

Not sure he lost control of the poor wheelie, more over braked & locked the front. Could have been due to braking before the front was on the floor of course.

I love the way a big thing is made of over 130mph, that's not difficult on most bikes. It doesn't even take long so you can do it in a quick burst & slow for the next danger.

Well that was silly wasn't it. I doubt he'll be doing that again in a rush!

No, it doesn't take that long to get to that sort of speed on a bike, but it's still twice the speed limit. He incriminated himself.

He's very lucky to be alive after that crash, mind!

Doing 140MPh on a public road depends on what exactly? Im afraid bikers need to understand that the acceleration and speed the bikes are capable of means that any other road users reactions times need to match Valentino Rossi's on a wet Jerez to ensure they dont inadvertendly cut them up or "inconvenience" them.

I really cant see what circumstances warrant anything over 120MPh unless you are wanting to end up in casualty or worse.

This, would ban him for life personally. Save it for the track,(even then you are putting other riders at risk.)

So 120 MPH is ok, but not 140...

Nasty surprise for the van driver as well, he probably thought he had just squished some poor sod.

Ye well, thats the way it goes around here. Someone driving a nice car in any stupid way is "making progress" or someone else is at fault. Everyone else is stupid and a danger and gets what they deserve. I'm not saying what the guy did was sensible, just that there is double standards.

All sorts of stty driving is defended on Pistonheads. I find it quite alienating and I'm amazed Haymarket allow comments like that to remain on the forum.

What distance does it take to get from (say) 30mph to 130mph, and back to zero, on a bike?

It might not take much time but it will take some distance. And at that speed, what are your reactions like? I don't care if a biker gets mangled through his own stupidity but, as the video shows, when it goes wrong there are others on the road who might not be ready to avoid 130mph of flying idiot. I don't think there is a single PHer who doesn't occasionally exceed the limit, but more than double? No-one can defend that, surely?

Distance I don't know, but a road I often touch 120mph on when riding would rarely see 80mph when I had my XJ6 & then I'd get to max speed in the car further down the road than I did on the bike.
At an estimate our current van can reach 80mph & stop in about the same time/distance as I can touch 120 on the bike.

Agreed on reactions, but then I feel NSL should be No Speed Limit again & expect people to learn to judge safe speeds themselves. If they can't, it's dangerous driving just like this biker got.

No flies on the van driver though. If he wasn't as switched on as he was the outcome could have been much stickier.

I found the police's description more interesting. According to them, the van was hit from behind by the following vehicle because the van 'braked suddenly'. LOLWUT? Don't they mean because the following vehicle was either tailgating or not paying attention? I've done nigh on half a million miles in the last 10 years, and I've never, ever, hit the car in front because it 'braked suddenly' for a hazard. I must be doing it wrong... Their long-winded description reads like the hero van driver slams on the anchors because of his god-like hazard perception, forcing the poor chap behind to unavoidably rear-end him because, well, that's what happens when hazards emerge and drivers drop the anchors. How on earth would he be expected to avoid a collision? I mean it's not like one can hold back to a suitable distance from the guy in front to maintain a stopping space (which would be even bigger for a van), is it? Oh, wait...

I did leave a comment on the video but I won't hold my breath for a suitable reply. tongue out

I don't think driving/riding very fast indeed is always stupid or indefensible. I think it depends on the vehicle and the situation.

In this case, it looks like it was, but I'd not say that it was always stupid to drive at double (or more) the limit.
