In the beginning there was the AJP 4.2 V8.
Then came the 4.5 and later, the Speed Six lump.
Then there was Red Rose and recently Lightweight.
I recall the Red Rose being an optional upgrade but I've heard it described a standard model variant too; ditto the LW.
Can anyone explain the evolution of all these, what was available when and to which models and can they be retro fitted, say to an older car and if so do certain options only apply to certain models?
P.S. What was the significance of the octane switch on that LW car tested in EVO (or CAR) sometime ago and where did that fit into all this? Aaargh!
Trivial knowledge but I need enlightening.

No, it's got me foxed too. Toucans are the same - every time I see one in Sprint it's either a different shape or it's got a different letter at the end.

From what I understand (could be wrong, though) the LW was introduced to the 4.5 about a year or so ago (lightweight bonnet, doors and bootlid). I think this is standard on all 4.5s now, although the LW moniker has been dropped. The Red Rose pack is an optional extra for the 4.5 upon purchase, but this can be retrofitted to older 4.5s. I'm not so sure about the LW mods being retrofitted, I would assume it would b fairly easy although the noticeable improvements in performance would be negligible IMO. I don't think any of these mods apply to the 4.2 or speed six, or at least I have never heard of them.

It would be good however to have a new addition to the stable at the Motorshow i.e a Cerbera S or Cerbera R .

Octane switch is for Red Rose Cerb to switch from 98RON to 95RON depending on what you're running, I understand it changes the fuel mapping and engine management to optimise performance?

From the TVR website:

"For the 2000 model year, lights, A pillars, roofline and seats were changed and lightweight bonnet, doors and bootlid were introduced on the Cerbera 4.5"

Was there an actual lightweight option prior to this or is the LW monicker just a differentiator that the lucky 's with new 4.5's have invented ??

The LW was standard on all 4.5's from beginning 2000 - the lightened bonnet, doors etc. It's also the new seperate recessed lights design. I'd ordered a 4.5 first thing in 2000, and just happened to get the LW. To be honest, I don't think the difference in weight is noticeable.

At some point after that there was an option for Xenon high intensity lights, high beam only which quite a few cars had - also easy to retrofit for main and high beam.

Then the TVR Centre had the Red Rose mods developed sometime in 2001, of which stuffbeaver & christof had the first couple of cars. These have higher compression, ported heads and a 97 octane engine mapping for more power & better response. They also have the 97/95 switch in case you can't get hold of 95. I drove a Red Rose car mid 2001 and eventually the factory agreed to do the work to my engine retrospectively - booked in November, work done in February. True power went from 350 to 400bhp, and it certainly feels faster!

The way I under stand it is....
4.2
4.5
4.0 (speed 6)
In 2000 the 4.5 became the LW (light weight)
Then in the this year? The Red Rose became a factory option

The specials eg 4.7 and so forth are a mixture of tuned cars to impress the magazines (eg using stuff from racing tuscans) and special orders for special customers.

Sure is Christof - did you buy it from Chris Neil's?
You did not do many miles in it ?
That will explain the speedo being swapped from km to miles.
Any other info?

Yeah have bought it from ChrisNeils.

Then sold it to TVR in 1999 to get my second Cerbie.

Mileage was low, but couldn't remember how much.

I think TVR had done all the 1998's mods on my beastie,-that means later cams, new clutch etc.

How long do you own the beastie and who was the seller.

I will try to find some piccies and send them over to you.

I have had the car since Dec 2000 - Purchased privately from a Steve Bailey in the Borders near Edinburgh. I think he bought it from Brandon as they seemed to know a lot about it.
It is a fine beast although several minor niggles. Electrics, Battery, Radiator.........
It has sports exhausts as the only mod.
Is the rear end/tailight configuration different from others of the same year?

Yeah, it's different, because in Germany we need a separate numberplate illumination.

As far as I know, the very latest Cerberas have the same taillight arrangement.
