best way to connect onkyo amp and tv

I have an onkyo 605 amp that hasn't been used for a while. I want to connect this to my Panasonic as650b tv. What's the best Way? Hdmi or optical? The amp has both connections and the tv likewise.

Your devices like your DVD player etc should be connected to the amp via HDMI then a HDMI cable to your TV.

Do you use the internal Tuner or possibly smart functions of your TV at all? If you do then you'll also need an optical cable from the TV to the amp to get TV sounds on your amp. Newer amps have ARC (Audio return channel) which can send the audio to the amp via the HDMI, however your Onkyo doesn't support ARC

yes il be using the tv as a tuner (no sky virgin etc)

I presume the Onkyo 605 has a HDMI repeater and not just a simple switch inside? I had an Onkyo amp once and as well as running the HDMI's from source to the amp I had to connect up optical cables to provide audio.
