I'm still in the market for a second hand Porsche Cayman 2.7 after a very dissapointing trip to a dealership at the weekend.

For the mileage, the car was a good price and relatively local, mechanically sound, and there were a few bodywork issues that we'd agreed they were going to fix for the asking price. I went there for a second viewing, fully intending to place a deposit and leave a happy bunny! However, when it came to getting the windscreen fixed (massive un-repairable chip), they'd been quoted £1000 and said they now werent willing to pay, so asked me to claim on my insurance once I bought the car, and they'd pay my excess.

Couldn't be out of the door quick enough!!

(Subsiquently they rang me back and said they'd fix it themselves, but it was too late by then)

Anyway, to my point, I'm now travelling alot further in search for a good Cayman from a decent salesman, even if it does mean being a little more leniant on the mileage!

I've seen a few with the sports exhaust, but only one on the market (currently) with the sports chrono pack.

My question is, which option is the best to have on a second hand 2.7 in regards to sound? The twin tail pipes look good, but are they worth it? I know for a fact I'd be driving with the sport button 'on' for 99% of my journeys with the chrono pack, therefore making it a more worthwhile option in terms of use, but does it even make a difference to the audio note of the exhaust?

Sorry for the rant

Cheers

Could well be shot down in flames but without a sports exhaust being fitted i don't see how sport chrono could change the exhaust note.

Well the current Porsche statement (http://www.porsche.com/uk/models/cayman/cayman/chassis/sport-chrono-package/) is that when the Sport Button is pressed the chrono pack is "...accompanied by an even more emotive sound" however, this is for the current production model.

Is this also the case for the MK1 2.7 with sports button and chrono pack?

When I test drove my S it had sport chrono but not sports exhaust and I couldn't hear any difference in the exhaust note at all with sport chrono activated or not. Had sports exhaust fitted as part of the deal and can now hear a difference.
After my TVR's and AM Vantages the S without sports exhaust was way too quiet for me.

Is it not best just to get a Carnewal?

Chrono is a waste of time.

Stick a Carnewal on.

IMO.

Details on my site of both.

No.
Sports exhaust - button on dash to make exhaust sound louder. More noticeable at lower speeds. Doesn't increase power, performance
Sports chrono - sports button increase throttle sensitivity, hardens red-line cut out and retards point at which electronic handling aids kick in. Also includes the chrono dial on top of dash. If car has sat nav it also allows you to trace/record laps using the GPS sensor.

I had both on my 987 manual plus sat nav (was an ex- demonstrator). I regularly used the sports exhaust button. I could have lived without the sports chrono button. I also had the PASM suspension and would rate that over the chrono too.

Good luck with the hunt! You'll find what you want eventually

I too am looking for a Mk1 Cayman and based in the south. Without name and shaming and falling foul of Pistonheads rules can you please give some clues to which car you saw and had bad dealer experience so can I avoid a wasted journey as I am planning to view a few this weekend.

Thanks for the help guys, I'll have to look into the exhausts some more, definitely something I'm interested in anyway!

I wont be doing any track days so I've got little-to-no use for a Chrono Pack in that case.

In regards to nickydee's post, they have two cars currently on their website for sale. To be fair, the first time I viewed, one of the salesmen was very helpful, I must have just caught the others on a very very bad day, wasn't even allowed to test drive without agreeing to their terms. However the car in question just wasn't up to my standards, each to their own I guess. It's whether you're happy to pay that amount for a car that needs a lot of work, or are willing to take the risk of them getting the work done to a good enough quality. It is completely solid mechanically though.

Let me know how the hunt goes, which cars are you viewing at the weekend, whats your target price?

I'm taking next week off work and doing some travelling around on Monday and Tuesday.
