Engine to engine stand question

I have to return the engine crane I hired this morning back by 09:00 tomorrow, and need to use it to lift the lump into position to mate it to the Sealey ES550 engine stand I have.

I know that it needs to be mated to the flywheel side of the lump, but thats it. Am I right in assuming you use the bolt holes that fixed the bell housing to the block?



If so, can anyone tell me what thread/pitch these bolts are please? Obviously the original bolts aren't long enough to use with the stand.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Fit the head of the stand to the engine (very long bolts 3/8 UNC bolts + washers) first. Then lift the engine high, lift the stand base up onto the 'head', and then you can lower it off the crane.

From memory, the bolts don't go in very far do they...? 3 inch long do? I don't want to pack it out with too many washers.

Never used an engine stand for the rover lump just a good sturdy stand with blocks to firstly sit the engine and sump complete the once heads etc off roll block over at this stage they arent heavy take off sump crank etc then spin onto bellhousing to remove pistons etc plenty of pics of this system on my johns chimaera rebuild thread.

Don't be afraid to use long bolts packed out with washers /spacers.

when a fully dressed engine is hanging from the end of a stand by 4 bolts it feels all wrong but works!

Look if you can lift a Ford Essex lump out on 2 x 5/16 bolts you guys are worrying to much fully dressed they was about 450 pounds

for the rv8 if you've got any spare rocker post bolts they work a treat to bolt the engine stand to the back of the block..


bolt the adaptor to the engine then lift the whole lot and slot the adaptor onto the stand.. not what i saw one chap trying to do, which was balance the engine on the crane and try and bolt it to the stand in mid air !!!

All done this morning, and returned the crane in time

Bought 4 100mm long 3/8 UNC bolts and 4 washers for each bolt. All wrapped up and waiting for a strip in a month or so. Want to get on with the rest of the resto.
