Civic Type R/VX220/M3/Supra/Golf gti
Discussion
Hi everybody!
I just sold my previous car (Vauxhall Corsa) and have just got myself a new job as well. I have never been in the financial position to drive a car that I actually liked! (Always been broke!) But now, after passing my medical degree, have a stable job as a hospital Dr. Just wanted some input on a nice sporty motor, that would not break the bank. Something with a bit of performance and half decent economy, because I regularly have to commute in it as well. Narrowed it down to 5 cars that I have like for ages. The civic type r, vx220,supra,m3 and golf gti. Any input from far more experienced members regarding past experiences from any of these vehicles and other suggestions will be appreciated. Do not want a mundane typical exec saloon that I am expected to drive!
Cheers.

Welcome, that's a good choice you have made, having owned all of these it' looks like an odd short list as they are good for very different reasons !
If you've previously only had a Corsa I'd say go for the Golf or the Civic and then it will come down to do you want a great all rounder that's nice to be in but ultimately a bit soft or do you fancy thrashing around in a hot hatch with rock hard ride and a mega engine?

Vx220 is a bit of an odd one out in your list, as its a bit beyond the requirement of decent performance but unfortunately not as civilized as the rest for commuting and it would definitely be a labour of love in the winter, couldn't tell you what the MPG is like to tell you the truth despite owning one myself as it doesn't have an MPG counter in it and I haven't bothered to work it out.

You have owned all these cars before? Woah! I understand your point. How would you compare the Civic vs the Golf? Out of your list I would take the M3 all day long.
I would take a Integra DC5 over the Civic, a Golf R32/R over the GTi.
Other cars to look at may be Nissan 350z, Impreza STI, Audi S3, Mini JCW, Vauxhall Monaro and BMW Z4
Appreciate the input. s3 and scooby are really worth a second look. My sister has the cooper s, and I do not fancy it much tbh. I think the monaro would fall into a little too "hardcore" category, and would guzzle too much me thinks! (A real demon in sheeps clothing though!)I would take a Integra DC5 over the Civic, a Golf R32/R over the GTi.

Welcome to PH!
I've owned a VX220 Turbo, an M3, a Golf GTI, and I regularly drove a housemate's CTR. From R1gtr's post, I've also owned an STI and currently own a 370Z. The key thing to remember is that they're all very different cars for good reasons.
The first thing to mention is that the VX220 is the most "pure" form of sports car you'll get - it doesn't come with any creature comforts - the heater only (poorly) demists the windscreen and is an obvious afterthought. The M3 and, to some extent, the CTR are useable everyday but have immense performance reserves on tap when necessary, at the expense of raw sports car feel. Imprezas and Nissan Z-cars are a good mix of the two.
It really depends on what you're after in terms of a car. Happy to help further if you fancy explaining exactly what you want out of a car.
