evening all.

CL203 c class coupe
ten days ago up flashed coolant go to workshop..OK went to my local garage good guy I've had a lot of cars through here for various bits and pieces over the years always a pleasure.

anyway before i went to said garage i did some poking around expansion tank was full no obvious signs of a leak OK maybe the thermostat stuck ? the fan was running in a high mode temp not going over 25% (before halfway just above) my first thoughts where thermostat/sensor on the tank.

waited a week before my appointment all the time running the car to work and back say 20 miles. Thursday arrives and i drop the car of in the morning 10am about 4.30 pm that night i call and ask how's it all going. i'm told it's not ready maybe tomorrow.

Friday lunch time.
i get a call from the owner informing me he cannot fix it i need an auto electrician he wont charge me and can i pick the car up.
ok i think maybe some more digging needed this does after all seam to be a common issue with this model.

i get in the car put the key in and there it is engine management light on i pointed it out he said oh ill plug it in and proceeded to do so removing the light.
as i leave the garage i can feel a distinct lack of power leave it about 20 yards and no something is wrong i returned it and told them what had happened i was told oh well i guess we have "inherited the problem now" leave it with us!..i didn't feel like i had much of a choice also I've used them for years so no reason to feel anything funny from what just happened.

fast forward to today i didn't hassle them as i used a work van to get to and back from work garage called me today and said it's all done he sent it to the electrician apparently and they found some knackered wires under a wing or wheel arch and replaced the sensor!!! he was not going to charge me anything he paid the electrician in cash and want's me to pay him back in cash tomorrow when i pick it up. ..i feel like ive been had .so over too you guys what's the PH opinion ? cost £200

If the problem is fixed what is the issue?

You want them to fix your car for free?

Have they fixed your issue?

It could be as simple as them looking at it has cause wires to fray just that little bit more to cause and the intermittent issue to now raise its head, they have seen its electrical in their investigation and told you they can't fix it.

You then use the car again (maybe they didn't take it for a run after looking) and now they have done the decent thing and got it fixed for trade and charged you trade.

What exactly do you not like about it?

I wish.

There are some sensors on the X-type exhaust which basically seem to do fk all apart from stop an orange light from lighting up (nobody could ever tell me what they were for). Because it was a V6, there are 4 of these things - 2 upstream and 2 downstream. Every time one failed (which they did every so often) it was about £300 because half the bloody engine had to come off to get at them.

After replacing 2 of them, I learned to ignore orange lights.

Find out what the sensor costs - shouldn't be difficult, identify it & see what MB parts dept charge for it. If you think they've done you over, pay them & then don't use them again.

I had a 307 which needed a new manifold, manifold pressure sensor and software update, Peugeot quoted me over a grand.

Good job I know a friend who owns a garage, so in the end I got it all done for £400.

From the sounds of it, the garage sounds like a very rare place you can trust. The fact that they weren't going to charge you for the initial inspection and they paid an electrician for the work and then to later claim the money back from you, tells me they value your business.
