So is Paris banning all cars registered before 31 December 1996 or just the diesel cars?

Looks like cars and busses pre 2001 to start followed by cars pre 1996. But it's hard to be sure as my French is lousy. Seems to be coming in this summer.

You mean apart from when they're not on strike or at lunch?

I read it as a 1997 - 2000 car is ok at first, but then latterly will be banned.

What are all the old Mk1 Twingo drivers going to do?

Bit daft really, so you're 1995 Twingo will be banned but your neighbours 2002 Range Rover V8 will be fine?

Not sure in two years time if anybody will actually be living in Paris. Most seem to be in London or Belgium today to avoid the punitive taxes and hideous economy. Time for an election me thinks as this will kill the weak French car production business. Too many people are now buying foreign cars and not the usual French disposable runabouts.

So we won't see another 205 GTi roaming the streets of Paris? This doesn't seem right.

Like anything that's banned or taxed, it's never really thought through. Take resident parking permits in Richmond. IIRC it costs more to own a V8 RR as a resident in Richmond because V8 RRs are bad mmkay. However, it's ok to be bad if you can afford it. Funnily, it's now something of a cachet to continue to drive such cars in Richmond as you're seen as rich enough to not care about the tax. biggrin

What proportion of cars regularly driving through Paris would be 20+ years old anyway?

Any idea how far out from the city centre this extends? I'm a bit worried as our politicians here in Ireland have a habit of copying other countries' stupid policies

Quick translation of .....http://www.bfmtv.com/planete/paris-incitations-et-restrictions-le-plan-antipollution-d-anne-hidalgo-adopte-862499.html

The anti pollution plan starts from july 2015 and bans certain trucks and buses older than 2001. RATP buses are exempt.
From july 2016 all vehicles registered before Jan 1997 are banned as are motorbikes registered before Jan 2000.
The above rules are applied between the hours of 8am and 8pm

The rules will be tightened gradually each year between 2017 and 2020 so certain vehicles will be totally banned and only diesels from 2011 ( euro5 compliant ) will be eligible.

I would hope that classic cars will be exempt for x days/year.

A 20 year old Mk1 Twingo Euro 1 diesel will pump out order of magnitude more HC,NOx and particulates than a Euro 3/4 Petrol range Rover....which is the main issue for cities.
The MK1 never came as a Diesel though, that's why I chose it as an example.

Of course you're right, Diesel technology has improved vastly over the last 20 years but I seriously doubt a 1995 Twingo pollutes more than a Petrol V8 Range Rover or a even a 2.0 litre petrol Laguna.

So wouldn't it make more sense to ban all Diesels manufactured before 2001?

Plus, there's then the whole can of worms that a small capacity petrol engine, in a small car, can be more efficient than a Diesel in the same car, when it comes to city stop start driving.
