It seems to me that a cloud of gloom has descended over this noble (or TVR, or Lotus...whatever) establishment recently - I count about 4 threads on depression already.

So what are PHers tips to keep yourself happy in this drudgery we call life? What do you do on a day-to-day basis to remind yourself that life is worth living? (and keep it clean - if you can...)

Me?
-Every week, buy yourself something unnecessary but enjoyable - CD, book, DVD, computer game or whatever. It makes me think I've 'earned' something. Probably a hangover from childhood 'treats' but it workd for me.

-If I had a car, I'd go for a thrash. I don't as yet so I can't (unless I've hijacked my Mum's and hoon it through Poynton and Woodford on the way to/from anywhere). What I do is to keep a picture of one of them somewhere prominent - ie a calendar, and remind myself that it's what all this stress is for.

-Once you've seen the TV/Radio news once, turn it off. I only need telling the world's a catastrophically shite place once a day. 'News junkies' are depressives in my book.

-Find something you like doing (music, DIY, anything really) and don't give a toss if anyone thinks you're sad for doing it - they must be propping up such a bland facade in front of a soulless personality if they're going to criticise you for liking something.

-Think about why you're drinking. If you're doing it because you're feeling miserable and there's no-one around to talk to, it's probably going to make you feel worse.

Lunch with my beloved in a little country pub, followed by dessert in a nice country lane

Come to think of it - I sing all the time. Loudly. Winds hell out of my housemates but so what eh? Right now, Ozzy's on loudly, there's no-one in and I'm surprised I haven't typed the lyrics to No More Tears in a post somewhere

I rarely read papers or watch the news. That way I'm completely oblivious to any 5hite going on elsewhere

Work like you don't need the money.
>Love like you've never been hurt.
>Dance like nobody's watching.
>Sing like nobody's listening.
>Live like it's Heaven on Earth.
>

works for me

Just little things like:

Powersliding the car every day on the way to work.
Playing the guitar every day.
Comedic banter with colleagues and friends.

Great thread V8...

Life is about compromises. Deep down we all think that we want something different to that we actually have.

For me, happiness finally arrived when I gave up on this idea, and stopped looking to where the grass appeared greener, or where the possession other than the one I owned was the one I really wanted..

So I know appreciate what I have far more. A result of this is that I aspire for less than I did from a material point of view, but thats fine by me.

And yes, a regular hoon in the car is essential. As are good friends, and a good laugh from time to time.

"Whenever life gets you down, Mrs. Brown,
And things seem hard or tough,
And people are stupid, obnoxious, or daft,
And you feel that you've had quite enough,

Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving and revolving at nine hundred miles an hour, that's orbiting at nineteen miles a second, so it's reckoned, a sun that is the source of all our power.

The sun and you and me and all the stars that we can see are moving at a million miles a day in an outer spiral arm, at forty thousand miles an hour, of the galaxy we call the 'Milky Way'."

etc, etc, etc...

I like to think about just how good I really do have it. Good friends, great family, fun times, stuff (not that it's really very important), a good job (not that I really like it, this is the one thing I'd like to change)

It could always, always be worse, and it'll all work out in the end.

i tend to find some country lanes and go for a nice drive (with the roof down if pos) and just make the most of the time on the open roads away from everything.

Worked for me, and is still working. I may sound like a rather content boring person, but I am happy thanks to these small things.

a) Seeing the luckyness that surrounds you only by being who you are and where you are. That helps you to appreciate life a lot more.

b) Be patient, things don't get sorted out in a day most times, or even in a longer time. Give yourself time.

c) Sleeping, lazying and chocolate are good for you.

d) Spend time with the ones you love.

e) Remember why you should be happy.

f) Don't watch the news, and if you do, remember points a, d and e.

g) If depressed or unhappy with yourself. Complain, don't keep it in, but also laugh, and this includes laughing at oneself, watching stupid movies, reading comic books and avoiding anything philosophical, metaphisical or deep. Politics are a no no. And conmiseration is a loss of time that sinks you further down.

Now I sound like a self help book...

Jack Johnson in the CD Player relaxes me endlessly.

My brother pointed out to me once that when you're feeling blue the best thing to do is to try and enjoy all the little things in life. So instead of lying in bed thinking about life, just think how warm, safe and comfortable you are. When i'm in the shower i think about how clean and hot it is, not about the lecture in 20 mins time. Etc etc. It works.

I find being outdoors helps a lot. Last year I grew some vegetables in the garden, they weren't all a success, but I found it theraputic. Hang on, I'm only 17! Going out for a good bike ride is thoroughly enjoyable as well. I actually find that too much time indoors or using a computer gets me down.
