I think i need a new battery on my 2010 CS. I have the extended warranty at least until December this year. Not sure how much longer going to keep the car. Do i really need to go and buy the Porsche Moll battery at about £300 or can i just get the right one from Bosch etc? Has anyone ever had a warranty claim refused because of a non Porsche battery rather than just heard hearsay and rumours?

Cranks better than stock and despite being slightly larger, was lighter...
If your warranty is up and you're not extending, fit one of those.

After just paying £250 for a new battery and £450 for new idler rollers, neither covered on warranty, I'm starting to wonder if this warranty is worth paper it's written on! I could have done the battery myself for £89 and had the rollers done at an Indy for lets say £200 and be around £400 better off at the moment!
I do admit they changed the steering pump under warranty while they were sorting out the rollers because it was getting a bit rough, so I suppose I should be happy and keep paying through the nose for the non warranty items...

It depends on your point of view. I never got an extended warranty on mine and my brother went a step further and cancelled the 3rd year of warranty when he ordered his Spyder and got a refund. They're a modern car, you wouldn't warranty anything else past it's 2 year mark 'just incase'. With the way Porsches warranty works, if you go to anyone else to change a battery or tyres, they've got reason to wiggle out of it. If you have an engine issue and they have an alert that the engine was over-revved (something the ECU seems to be able to log, even when it hasn't. There are threads on it...) then they can stitch you up for that also. But not after they've already done you for the cost of taking your engine out and apart for an exploratory look-see, making it increasingly difficult to get the work done elsewhere. All the time you're paying double for servicing and parts, and the warranty itself on top of that... No, I very much don't think Porsche's warranty is worth the paper it's written on.
As we were planning on keeping our cars a long time it made sense to take the 'risk' and accept that when things need replacing, we'll have to pay for it and should the worst happen and an engine re-build is required, then we'd have had them long enough that the cost would be covered by the savings of not using Porsche and having a warranty.
FWIW, in the six years or so I've had my car, it's been no more expensive to run than a normal car. Because it is a normal car when you take Porsche themselves out of the equation.

Get yourself a Bosch battery from EuroCarParts for about £100 & swap them out. Keep old battery & when you need to take car into OPC for warranty renewal or any warranty work put the old battery in (but make sure it's had a charge put through it before). Job done.
My battery was actually changed by OPC under warranty when it failed, but that was because if had failed after only 1 year.

I agree with Juan re warranties, back in 2004 i bought a 996 Turbo with at 3 year old 7K on the clock. It was covered by Porsches used car warranty. I was never happy with the brakes - which vibrated under braking, after several attempts by OPC to rectify (skim disks, new pads) within a couple of months of purchase I needed complete set of new disks and second set of pads - warranty claim refused. I later had a heat shield on the exhaust fail - not covered by warranty. Subsequently, I needed two new AC condensers and three new radiators none of which would have been covered buy warranty (which had expired by thbis time anyway). So it seemed that all parts likely to fail were excluded from warranty.
I just needed an identical 096 battery for one of my cars, got one with 4 year warranty from an eBay retailer for £35+vat delivered. It's on a Golf diesel (which may need more cranking amps than a flat 6) and working just fine (turns over far faster than it ever has in 3 years of ownership)
I'm sure a Bosch has a good chance of outlasting it but for the money it wasn't much of a risk and I thought I'd give it a go. My 996 battery isn't great but it's still soldiering on, when it gives up I'll be getting the same type.

As for the warranty my car is 6 years old and has had over £1000 of warranty work in the past 6 months and £1000 of work not covered under warranty, for the latter OPC was cheaper than two well respected Porsche independents in the north west!
I've kept the warranty just in case I decide to sell the car spontaneously which I have a habit of doing, I always sell privately too so many buyers will consider it a must.
