Anybody had trouble with Avon tyres prematurely cracking?
My tyres are marked 12 02 bought new at National Tyres in 2012 they look like they are about 20 years old with cracking all around the side walls and in-between the treads on all 4

The week number is before the year so looks like yours were made in 12th week of 2002, which would explain the cracking.

According to this link (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=11) that means your tyres were manufactured in Mar/Apr 2002 - hardly surprising that they have started to crack if they've been stored for so long...

I don't know if it is true, but I heard that it was illegal for a tyre dealer to sell tyres more than four years after their date of manufacture.

I have heard of cracking on Avons before, it's often cosmetic and not a cause for concern.

I suspect the OP has is 12 and his 02 mixed up as there's no way the garage has thirteen year old tyres kicking about.

Had exactly the same issues with Avon Roadrider bike tyres- no joy from Avon and put me off them for life. I see many tyres now suffering the same problems, failed a 3 year old MX5 at work for all four tyres due to deep cracking down to the cords..Continentals seem prone to it too.Must be some new mix manufacturers are using instead of rubber!
