Chaps,

I'm having a bit of bother sourcing Schroth harnesses for my 993 RS. I don't know exactly what they came with originally. However, this is the spec I am after:

3 inch wide shoulder harnesses.

Turn-style release buckle, NOT a button (I know this isn't road legal).

Must be 6 point and red.

Will be used with the Clubsport welded in cage, so the shoulder straps will be connected to a harness bar.

I have been in touch with a Schroth harnesses dealer who normnally supplies aircraft, such has been the trouble trying to get a Demon-tweeks style car parts supplier to help me. The aircraft supplier sent me this, can anyone answer his questions?

"Hi John

Below is Schroth's reply on the spec.

Unfortunately I do not know the exact specification of the restraint made in 95 for Porsche.

In general we are offering harnesses with 3" shoulder belts and 2" lap and crotch straps with a rotary buckle. The lap belts for Porsche are always 2" and in pull-down version. Most of the Porsche seats cannot be used with 3" lap straps. 3" lap straps come in pull-up version and the length adjuster could become a problem if it is positioned in the hole of the seat.

It is up to you what specification you would like to use. If it is possible to use a 3" lap belt in your car with your seat. Both versions would be delivered with bolt-in attachments.

The price for a harness set, delivered UK is as follows:

Profi II-6 (with 2" lap straps) in red, blue, black or silver
£194.89 +VAT = £229
Profi III-6 (with 3" lap straps) in red, blue, black or silver
£208.51 + VAT = £245

Delivery approx 2 weeks from order.

Best regards, Peter"

Any help appreciated.

Carnewal stock the original RS Scroth harnesses,

www.carnewal-europe.com/cpx/p93052.jpg

I don't know if this is the exact model you are looking for?

Anyhow, why Scroth? do you want to keep the car as it was when it left the factory?

Paul....your knowledge never ceases to amaze me! Thanks for the link. I want Schroth harnesses because they were original equipment and therefore "cool".

However, I think the harnesses from Carnewal (original 993 RS items) look like they have 2" shoulder straps which I am not keen on. I think 3" straps are safer in the event of a crash. (F1 teams don't use 2" straps). I don't think the lap belts need to be 3", 2" will be fine. Here are the Carnewal original 993 RS harnesses:

These are the harnesses on the drivers side of my car. Notice the 3" shoulder straps. However, they have the push button release which I think is naff.

As you can see, the passenger side has the original looking logos and 2" shoulder straps, but again, they have the push button release, not the twist type.

The price of the Carnewal original RS harnesses is a wopping 495 Euros per set. The Scroth supplier I have found only wants £229 including VAT for a set, and that's with 3" shoulder straps. Is that what I should go for do you think?

To be honest, I would keep an original if you feel that is neccesary, but i would actually go for the safest, most comfortable harness I could find.... Somewhere like demon tweeks may have top harness at a sensible price.

Paul,

That is a great link, thanks. They have exactly what I am looking for, i.e. 3" shoulder harnesses, twist release buckle, in red. Excellent.

Safety Devices the rollcage people in Soham supply them, although I believe they now sew their Safety Devices label over that of Schroth. The turnkey buckle still says Schroth though.

Steve,

Mate, thanks anyway but I already knew that and I have spoken to them. I just wanted the "original look" of the Schroth items. Safety Devices wouldn't supply me with harnesses with the Schroth logo on.

Steve,

I spoke to them, but I didn't get much joy. I did, however buy a new Momo steering wheel from them which will have nice new Porsche horn button.

The 3" Schroth harness is standard equipment in the GT3 and GT3 RS, so you can order them through any OPC. With discount they come in around £250. They look identical to the driver's harness in the black car above.
I have fitted these in my RSR to replace the original 2" now that I am taking my track time more seriously (keeping originals before anyone asks!). All that was required are 4 small turned adapters for the side anchors, since these are made specifically for the GT£ and the bracket has a slightly larger hole than the original.

9M,

Thanks for that.

Do the harnesses for the GT3 have a turn-style release for the buckle or a button?

Also, "4 small turned adapters for the side anchors".....is this a DIY job or can you buy them?

Drat. Just phoned the OPC and they have no Schroth belts at all in the UK or Germany.

I'll speak to fvd.de.

Centre turn knob release. I made the adapters for my car on our lathe, don't suppose it would take long to replicate them if you need them.

Thanks again 9M.

I just phoned fvd.de and it turns out they have a British partner called Powermarks in Lincolnshire that I hadn't heard of before. I spoke to the chap there and I have ordered the ones off the fvd.de website which I bet are the same as yours, Colin. I'll see if my mechanic can install them, but if we are struggling I may ask you about the brackets you made! Thanks.
