With all the talk of the Audi RS3 being overpriced and then some further comments in that thread about £30k 1.6 diesel Honda Civics it made me consider what i'd buy if i were to buy new, regardless of the amount being spent i'd want to achieve the best value for money available, so what cars give the best VFM when new? and i guess to expand on that what second hand cars (typically due to high depreciation) stand out for this too?

Vauxhall VXR8.

Fiat Grande Punto values are comical. My 5 year old (at the time) Fiat Grande Punto T-Jet (1600 on UK roads) cost me 3.5k.

I would've thought at least 5k?!

I guess it rather depends on what you term value for money. Buying new, if you want a lot of kit for little outlay, then something from the KIA stable would probably do it. If it's bang for buck, then maybe a Renaultsport product?

Used, I suppose you can't really go wrong with a Jaaaag, as they tend to drop like stones while combining good looks, decent 'go' and plenty of kit.

It's become a cliche, but the M135i seems to offer a lot for the money.

Dacia Duster

Kia Sportage

Base 3-series BMW

There are some great new car bargains out there so long as you don't get carried away in the options list.

Leon 1.4 ACT FR. £17,500 through a broker for a modern, well made good to drive hatch that has a torquey 150bhp engine and real world 45-50mpg, plus loads of kit.

For performance, the fiesta and focus STs are great value

Not my cup of tea and probably not for many here either, but the local Skoda emporium are offring pre-reg Roomsters for £9995. Secondhand it must be a Jaguar XF 3.0, there are 61 reg low mileage examples at a Jaguar dealer for £19k apiece.

997.2 GT3RS.

Buy it. Drive it. Sell it for more than you paid for it.

Cant get better value than that.

Caterham.
(low - mid end models )
They really don't depreciate.

In the real world.
Dacia - £7000 gets you a new car with a 7 year / 100,000 mile warranty

End of thread.

Worry free motoring does not get much cheaper.

So... assuming it falls to rust in 7 years.

£7000 / 7 years = £1000 a year.
12 months in a year = £83 a month.

Most of us spend more than that on takeaways a month.

Edit: That is £2.74 a day. About the cost a medium size Latte.

Second hand. Lexus LS400 for about a grand. They are rising in value - and everything works. biggrin

How?

They are at least two to three times more expensive than their contemporary competitors the XJR and E55 on the second hand market which will do neigh on exactly the same thing (given a few BHP here and a couple of tenths of a second to 60 there).

Good cars? No doubt. Good investment? Maybe. 'Best Value'? I don't see it.
