£10 grand Rolls Royce or Bentley
Discussion
I have £10k to spend on something interesting have always had a soft spot for a RR or Bentley and now fuel is the lowest it has been for years, well seems like a good time ! I love the look of the Early Shadow but I know a Turbo R will be nicer to drive or even a 90 - 96 Silver Spirit, opinion invited not sure how important milage is or when key service points occur , big jobs are needed ?
It seems history, colour and condition are key ..... and avoid the 81 - 86 cars

As far as I have found the early cars average about 12 mpg and the later fuel injected cars about 16 mpg is this right has anyone had experience of these cars ?
They do have awesome interiors :-) will probably do about 3-5k miles a year I also have a 77 VW camper and a new Abarth so this is a 3rd car

This was my Shadow I:

Bought for £4500 last year and passed its MOT with no advisories!
Realistically the fuel consumption was about 10mpg around London.
Another one I never should have sold - I will never find another decent one at that money.
You will be able to get a very good example for £10k if you shop around. I'd find a nice one and keep a £2k slush fund for the repairs it will inevitably need. The engines and gearboxes are generally very reliable but repairs to things like suspension (self levelling rear and front too on >1969 models), brakes, hyrdraulic pipes, cooling system and electrics can get very expensive!
Rust is also a significant problem. These are built like tanks but you need to watch out for filler in the wheel arches, sills, valances and on the chassis rails. The underside of my Shadow was covered in leaked oil and this had done wonders to preserve the original metalwork.

After some research seems a spirit 2 or 90's Bentley are the way forward the fuel injection and 4 speed box average 15 mpg compared to 11 on the shadows I shared a business unit with a wedding car company 10 years ago and did him the odd favour driving an early shadow and a later Bentley Turbo , loved both but remember the steering seemed vague on shadow , The Bentley was great very modern to drive and fast , I do love the Bentley interior but prefer the front of the Rolls I think looking down a bonnet graced by the spirit of ecstasy will really give the feel good factor I know a spirit 2 will be slower than the Bentley but hopefully a bit quicker and handle better than an old shadow ?
