I'm looking for a new car (2nd hand) and i think i'm going to go for an Audi A3. I would also like to get a Mk1 MX5 as a fun car which i can tinker with. I would use the A3 for commuting and going mountain biking. And the MX5 for weekend fun. The problem is I would need to take the A3 mountain biking which is usually in areas with good driving roads but i would be missing by not having the MX5. Does anyone have a solution for my situation? Shall i not bother with an MX5?
Thanks,
James

Speaking as a former owner, I wouldn't bother with the A3. There has to be a bike carrying "solution" for an MX5.

I need a hatchback really. I prefer to keep my bike inside the car.

Good luck with that - I still had to put mine on the roof as I needed to carry my daughter's as well sometimes.

Sounds like a hot hatch is the way to go (unless you don't mind getting a folding bike and putting it on the passenger seat of an MX5...)

BMW 130i would be a decent choice. You'll need to pop the front wheel off the bike though. Renaultsport Megane F1 is also meant to be a hoot.

Possibly a Saris Bones bikerack. As long as you go for the adjustable 2/3bike version they fit most cars. I've used a 2 bike version on several convertibles. However it doesn't fit on my Boxster. Definitely worth researching though. There shouldn't be the need for two cars purely because of your bike. For example an E46 M3 Convertible definitely fits bike-racks and has superb practicality. I'm sure others will be along to advise which racks will fit an MX5 or other roadsters

I'm going to look into some hot hatches and saloons. I don't think i would be able to just have an MX5 there not practical and comfy enough.
