A6 C6 AMI Retrofit
Discussion
Just in case anyone is interested in retrofitting the AMI unit in their A6, a little guide I did on another forum:
Seeing as I didn't get any answers on my other thread regarding the AV inputs, I decided to retrofit an AMI unit in the glovebox in place of the 6CD.
For anyone wanting iPod connectivity, it's a simple solution.
I ordered the AMI unit from eBay, there's a few on there, and it came with removal keys, and a lightning cable.
Installation procedure is VERY straightforward:
1) Turn MMI on.
2) Open glove box.
3) Remove all CD's from 6CD unit.
4) Turn MMI off.
5) Insert removal keys into the 2 slots on the CD changer, until they 'click'. A gentle pull on both keys and the unit slides out. There is plenty of cable, so you don't need to worry about it being fiddly.
6) Unplug the 2 sets of wires on the back of the CD changer, and plug them into your AMI unit.
7) Reboot your MMI to test the AMI before final installation. You will find the AMI unit under CD on the MMI, then press "source", where it will show Audi music interface. Plug your source (iPod/phone/etc) in, and your menus/folder appear, and away you go.
7) Slide the AMI unit into the slot the CD changer was in, until it clicks into place, smile to yourself at how easy that was, and laugh away as you just saved £260 on what a retrofit specialist was going to charge you.

My newly acquired S6 has an aftermarket aux in for ipod but I want the control and track info on the MMI so going to swap out the changer for this. Can you confirm which part number you have? From what I can tell the base part number is 4E0 035 785 with either B or F suffix on the end. I am led to believe that the F suffix means the AMI has a later software version?
This seems to fit the bill:

available from Amazon from the same company:

If I go with the F version do I need to update the MMI software first? Some forum posts elsewhere seem to indicate I do.
