Have had a look at one of them. Like the look as it will last a while. Only concern is it will be too big as everyone else that builds kids bikes seems to be at the 16'' wheel size and the beinn is 20'' we live nowhere near islabikes to test fit. How is the size defined is it to the top if the seat tube or top of the seat for the minimum inside leg?Looking at the sizing chart he'll just fit a Beinn 20 Small. Co-incedentally I have just bought the size up for our little one, so will be selling a blue 20 small. I'll be popping out in a bit to the garage to get it ready to take some photos, so will check the minimum seat height for you.
If you buy these second hand it's pretty much depreciation proof cycling. I'm down in Fife if you want a look at one?

My daughter got a Frog 52 and loves it. She did have an old Raleigh that we were given beforehand. The difference is huge. I was so surprised at the speed she got up to without much effort.
One of the reasons we chose a Frog over an Islabike was that she could try one out at the local bike shop so we got the correct size. It made it more exciting for her as she was involved in choosing the model, colour and some accessories. The price difference was also a factor. £50 more is a big jump up at those prices.

Snap and we chose Frog for the same reasons, mainly the fitting bit. Recent trip to Moors Valley
My 5yo daughter has been on a Beinn 20 Small since last summer when she was about the same height as the OP's son.
It was a big jump from her previous Cnoc 14 but she got to grips with it really quickly. Been round Wendover Woods, Black Park, Burnham Beeches etc. no problem.
Don't want to sound like an Islabikes bore but they really are great bits of kit. Light, well designed and rarely if at all require any tinkering to keep them running fast and silent.

I know pistonheads likes closure to a thread. Bought the islabikes beinn 20 and got it yesterday.
He had a quick cucle round the street with me and what a difference in speed from his old bike. I actually had to pedal properly as opposes to fanny about when out with him.
Have it in 3rd gear just now to let him get used to riding and will teach him to use gears once he is used too it.

Good for both of you! Just watch (in slight horror) as the speed of the crashes increases correspondingly. Also, it's not a bad idea to train your kid that the front brakes are actually effective. My son went straight over the bars the first time he tried them. He was on grass('cause I don't like A&E visits), it knocked him into full, rare, "listen to dad" mode.He had a quick cucle round the street with me and what a difference in speed from his old bike.
