You'll likely have to get the error code read .

Could be a faulty O2 sensor. These quite often throw a code without any obvious symptoms.

Faulty sensor, most likely. The bain of modern cars. The mechanical components are usually reliable, the electrics anything but.

So it still revs above 3000rpm?

My 2.5 v6 (before it failed an MOT and I sold it) had the engine light on and my odb2 reader showed an error with the O2 sensor but it wouldn't rev above 3k. However, if stopped at some traffic lights or similar for about 20 seconds, the light would go out and not come again until the next journey.

Problem is there are 4 O2 sensors (each bank, upper and lower) so you really need a code reader to find out which one it is as at £60-£100 a pop, you want to get the right one!
