Advice on setting up sound bar?

So, just bought a new sound bar,quick question about setting it up.
I have one audio input on the back, and one audio output on the tv.
Question is, currently. I have an output coming from the back of the sky box into the sound bar, which works fine.
Only problem is, content from my media server, played via the smart tv, does not get to use the soundboard.
Should I be taking the output from the tv into the sound bar, or will that only work for signals from the tv (and not the connected devices?)

Optical cable....from the TV to the sound bar. Everything else should be connected to the TV. An HDMI would also work but few sound bars have these...

The folks have a Yamaha one, HDMI from sky to sound bar and then out again to TV...
