Afternoon chaps, never had this issue before so unaware best way to go about it.

Recently moved in to a new property which has gates to allow access to a rear drive/paved area. Every other house on the row has a rear garden unlike this property.

The rear street backs on to a road with access to 16 propertys and a cut through to another street with alot of propertys on.

When we moved in the gates where a little worse for wear so was mot used in a number of years according to a neighbour. Over the weekend I have repaired them and moved my car on to give it a wash.

This morning a car has parked accross tue gates and is blocking me in. Now not knowing which house it belongs to as a number of streets use this road for parking.

I managed to get a lift in to work this morning and I work away during the week this hasnt caused me an issue but possibly could moving forward.

Aside from putting up a sign to stop this in future how do you go about finding out the owner? I dont want to cause any issues or arguments, I would just like my car out.

As a side note the fence has panels about an inch apart and is about 5ft high so you can see over and through so whoever has parked there must of seen my car which is bright red.

Thought about leaving a polite note on the car to ask them not to park there?

Is there a dropped kerb in front of the gate?

If the kerb is dropped and your car is blocked in then the car parking over the access is causing obstruction. Phone the police who can enforce this offence. Other wise a polite note on the windscreen.

If it happens a lot then you could phone your council roads department and ask if they could paint an access protection marking across the drive.

If it's not been used for years, locals may be accustomed to parking there. I would put a note on the screen of the offending vehicle, and then put up a notice on the gates. One of those, 'gates in constant use, no parking' ones.

Could they see your car parked? Or are the gates too high, or not see-thru?

If they are, could you leave the gates open to show they are now in use....just for a while

Thanks for the responses guys.

Its not a dropped curb, ours is the only gate where as all the others are normal fences.

I am away now until thursday possibly friday so if anybody is there then a note will be left and a sign on the gate. I didn't leave one this morning as it was pissing down with rain and I was in a hurry.

I am completely aware they will be used to parking there hence asking how to aproach this as civil as possible as I don't want to upset anyone.

I do not want to involve the police if I can, but worst case and I have too would it be 101?

To those asking if they could see the car, yes very clearly.

If it's not a dropped curb, they have every right to park where they parked.

I think you will find it is illegal to cross a pavement which does nor have a dropped kerb

It is illegal to cross the footway without a certified vehicle crossing, this is because the footway is not designed to take the weight of a vehicle constantly crossing it and it could result in the surface breaking up causing trip hazards for pedestrians.

Ask your local council about road access ramps. This will them enable the Police to enforce your access rights.
In the mean time, leave a note as said.
If you don't get a polite response, hire a rugby team to do some late night removal work.

No dropped kerb = they can park there.

Get the kerb dropped and be prepared for a big bill from the Council.

As others have said, without a dropped kerb it's not a driveway.

Doesn't have to be that expensive. Write to the council and ask them for their list of approved contractors, and ring around. Provided there are no streetlight columns, or services that need special attention, I would imagine you could get a vehicle access installed for around a grand. It's a small job, and would probably be half a day's work for a competent gang.

OP hasn't said whether there's a kerb there at all, let alone a dropped one, or whether there's a pavement between his property and the road. I think a pic is needed of the gates/access first before anyone can say whether or not there's anything he can do.

Regardless of a dropped curb or not if the person parking there can see a car behind the gates its a bit steep blocking it in. My be legally entitled to do so but you would have to be a turd to do so IMO

Ok a few points to what has been said so far.

The property is rented so would need to speak to the landlord about a dropped curb.

There is no path but there is a curb.

It is a not a drive but a garden that has been paved over.

Street view not available but google maps shows the red car where the rear of it is part blocking the area in question.
