Uh-oh, as far as I see it, if you're braking without use of any signal you're basically asking for an accident. How the flying fcensoredck do people know what you intend to do if you aren't using your fcensoredng indicators, we can't read your mind!!!!

It cannot just be me who's getting stuck behind someone because I don't know if they're turning left, right or just braking in the middle of the road because why the fcensoredck not?!?!

Sorry about the constant use of expletives - I just need you all to know it gets on my nerves. laugh

On one hand, yes.

On the other hand, the brakelights are a signal.

Remind me, what's the correct indicator signal for "I'm braking because there's something in front of me that you can't see" ?

Right, before this goes in the wrong direction, this situation only annoys me when I can see what's in front of them but they're CLEARLY stopping for something else. Be it a lane to the left, a lane to the right, a shop on the road etc.

Aren't brake lights a signal?

Maybe they think you're driving too close and they want you to back off a bit?

Yes. It tells people "I'm stopping" doesn't tell me what for though.

I've just stated above I can see clearly in front of said person, yet they're all of a sudden stopping for no reason....

Today, someone just stopped to the left of a tight road, and then around 5 seconds later, put their left indicator on and someone got out the passenger door. If they put their left indicator on first and then stopped don't you think that'd be easier or is this just me being an idiot? laugh

Thanks,

Elliott.

The OP has my sympathy; I'm a pretty chilled driver, but this really annoys me and is my number one (and probably only) hated thing on the road. Of the drivers who use their indicators (~80%?), almost all of them signal as they're doing the manouvre, not before it, which is totally and utterly pointless. The manouvre, of course, includes braking as well as turning. It's not just annoying and stupid, but causes a whole load of congestion too. Nobody's suggesting we all competely rely on signals, but when used properly they make traffic flow so much better.

What's truly bizarre is that if you ride with a moron like this (which is often, because it's well over 90% of drivers), they often extend their finger out and hover over the indicator stalk before they start their manouvre (slow, turn etc), they just don't choose to touch the indicator until they start the manouvre. banghead

I sort of agree with OP, great when other people brake very late for a turn onto a side road without indicating until the last second.

Which is more important - knowing that they're slowing/stopping and not hitting them, or knowing that they're finally getting out of your way ?

No, I don't get this one.

I do get the "signal as you actually make a turn" annoyance, it's too bleedin' late by then, but braking is a problem? Not for me, it isn't...

If someone brakes a little I see the brake lights and know they're about to do 'something' - It raises my awareness that they're likely to carry out some manoeuvre. Hardly a bad thing.

Sometimes, you need to slow before signalling because there's a turning between you and the turning you want to take. Signalling too soon isn't good either.

No, I don't get this one at all...

OP may have a point in some circumstances, but I'm a more bemused by drivers signalling to no-one.
It's quite often I'll be sat at a red light light watching the odd car navigate a roundabout winkering away. No traffic or pedestrians to be seen except me held at a red light - to whom are they indiwinkering? I don't suppose it does anyone any harm, but it's pointless. Guess it's just automatic/habit?

I'd rather they were in the habit of indicating when it isn't needed, than not doing it when it is.

In addition, it's not always obvious when a situation might develop that someone could benefit from the signal, even if they weren't there to benefit when the signal was initiated.

In that specific instance they may not know there's a traffic light where you're stopped, whether it's working or not (some are 'part time' as they call it, especially on roundabouts), or whether you may suddenly have to go through the red light for some unusual reason (ambulance up behind you etc).

In a more general instance, signalling almost everywhere is good practise because your observation is never perfect. As a pedestrian I constantly get annoyed at approaching cars not signalling - they can't see me (they don't have time to look that hard), but I can see them quite clearly and I want to know what they're about to do next. They might be able to see me, but be unaware that I'm considering crossing the road. In a more severe circumstance, you may not have seen a car or bike - it's not ideal, but it does happen, and signalling anyway builds in an extra layer of safety (always a good thing).

Advanced drivers bang on about this a lot, but it's all about proving they're signalling to people and not out of habit. My belief is that they can prove they're signalling to specific people by adjusting the timing of their signalling when there are people around, not by failing to signal when they can't see anyone, which to be honest is extremely annoying. Their defence is usually "one should never rely 100% on a signal, so they're only a courtesy, not a safety thing", and that's sort of right, but nobody's suggesting relying on a signal to do something that will be dangerous if that signal's wrong, just embaressing, rude or interferring with the flow of traffic.

Put simply, people who only signal when they can see another road user (or potential road user, people don't think about that!) to signal to are very short sighted indeed.

I said "most" above, and there are situations where I wouldn't signal, but it has to be completely obvious that my observation is 100% perfect, and those situations are very rare indeed.

I'm guessing OP shouts a lot at people that cant hear him, has a red face, and will likely have some kind of Cardio event in his mid fifties.

I always signal, why wouldn't you signal? I hate people not signalling on a roundabout while i wait for them as they approach... only for them to turn left, you absolute tool!

Also i agree with the OP but you can tell their lost or a muppet and can second guess that they will stop before indicating or not indicate at all! You had to treat everyone like an idiot and expect the unexpected when driving

Fundamental rule taught when driving.

Mirror, Signal, Manoeuvre.

If using the brakes is part of a Manoeuvre. Before it there should have been some signalling.

(Though most drivers do seem to do Manoeuvre, Signal, Mirror)

Careful - the OP might explode if someone did that in front of him.
