So, the OH is learning to drive, and we keep having the same old problem; no matter what we do with L plates, they won't stay on! Got the magnetic ones and they just fly off at will, which is odd as I never had a problem when I was learning. The back isn't such a problem, but the front is impossible to keep them on. The car in question is a Fiat 500, has anyone else encountered similar problems and how did you overcome it? Hopefully not likely OH, who fixed it on with masking tape and so has left me facing a bit of a bill from my paint repair guy!

Get a stick-on tbh, obviously the magnetic ones aren't working!

Would gaffer tap or stick on ones not damage the paint? Also I thought neodymium magnets were the things in headphones?

Don't worry about them. "Oh it must have come off this evening officer, I do keep a spare pair in the car though".

FULLY magnetic ones are key - not the ones with a strip top and bottom

Can't remember where I had mine from a few years ago when I was learning to drive, may have been a tesco petrol station. But the first set I had the back was magnetic but flimsy/bendy fridge magnet type thing, was very thin and that lasted a mile before it blew off. But the second set I had, had two bar magnets top and bottom than where very thick, must have been a good cm or so thick and ran the whole width of the plate, they hung on like anything, never had any trouble with them at all. See if you can find something similar.

Stick it the inside of the car window with a couple of strips of tape.

To the OP - are you driving some kind of TVR or Corvette?
It might have some bearing on your problem.

Electrical tape would be better to use rather than gaffer. It won't leave a mess on the paintwork.

When my sister was a learner in our old Clio, we had the magnetic ones, and they stuck on fine no problem at the back, but the front of the Clio was mostly plastic, so nowhere to stick the L plates on to, so we used blu-tack instead... biggrin

We learned from that when I turned 17, and we've bought these stretchy ones that you stick on to the inside of the windscreen.
They work very well.

To the point the rear one has disappeared, most likely because it's stuck on to the bottom of a box that was transported to Liverpool for my sister when she went back to uni after Christmas laugh

So we just got a normal card one and stuck that to the inside of the rear window with blutack smile

No, it's a fiat 500 like it says in the OP.
