Pundits and the laws of the game
Discussion
Martin Keown tonight, co commentating on Preston Man U.
"Rooney doesn't actually touch the ball, so he can't be offside, that's the rule."
Firstly, they're laws, not rules. And secondly, Keown is talking complete s
t. He's just made that up.
Honestly, the bloke has got one job, and he doesn't know the offside law! And he was a premiership defender ffs!!
Ray Parlour on talkSPORT last month.
"The ref was right not to give the penalty and defender who fouled him wasn't the last man."
Errr, "last man" interpretation was dropped about three years ago, you idiot. It's now "clear and obvious goalscoring opportunity". The ref can give a pen if there are 2 or 3 defenders if he thinks it was warranted, or not give a pen even if it was last man if he doesn't think it was a clear and obvious opportunity.
Really annoys me. Keown should be sacked immediately. For sheer laziness, if nothing else. Not knowing the laws of the game your paid to comment on.

I can't add anymore as I'm tired of ranting on Twitter and Facebook tonight and I need my bed. But the pundits are bad and there are a few refs (Taylor, Dean and Dowd are the worst three) who are absolutely shocking.
Slightly OT, but I get mad when the pundit claims someone has "won" a penalty. You can't win one, that suggests that the player was attempting to get a penalty awarded. As if anyone would do such a thing
.
A penalty kick is "awarded" to a team when a player of the opposing team has committed an offence. You cannot "win" one FFS. Cretins.

Handball! It needs to be INTENTIONAL (deliberate). Why are there so many interpretations of the law? They'll wrongly give a free kick if there is even the slightest unintentional handball outside the box, inside the box it's a lottery!
A defender stops a goal with his hand and is red carded. A striker puts it in with his hand and he's yellow carded!
Really needs some consistency.

The offside rule is no longer a rule, it's a matter of opinion.
You could have the exact same play and some refs or assistants will call it one way, yet others see it another way.
It's hard to be on a football park and not interfering with play. Even when you are offside the defenders and goalkeeper are accounting for your actions and position.

Good old Jimmy Hill always used to say that all 22 players were "interfering with play" simply by being on the pitch. If they weren't interfering with play, then they could have had no interest in the match, and shouldn't be there. You could have the exact same play and some refs or assistants will call it one way, yet others see it another way.

I agree with this whole "handball" thing. The law was introduced to stop a player deliberately using his hands - the reading of that law in modern times is stupid. You simply can't get out of the way of a ball flying at you at Mach 1. Most penalties awarded these days, shouldn't be.
There are 2 aspects, the laws of the game, and the Fifa instructions to refs on how the law should be interpreted. It's the latter that changes. The offside law for example has only had 1 change in my lifetime, and that is level used to be offside and now it's onside. Everything else is a change in interpretation.
On handball, the interpretation that refs are told to adopt is that if the ball strikes the hand, and the player handling could have avoided it, it's handball and a free kick / penalty. If it's deliberate, it's a yellow card also. If it's deliberate and prevents a clear and obvious goal scoring opportunity, it's a red.
I think that's a good interpretation. Otherwise defenders could defend with arms spread wide, and when the shot hits their arm, say that it wasn't deliberate as the hands were out before the shot was taken.
