Trek MTB nicked, help me choose a replacement

My Trek 4500 was stolen from my shed last night. Gits.
Anyway, onwards and upwards. I never really loved the bike and want to replace it before the nice weather comes (i.e. not freezing cold). So what hardtail would you guys recommend in the £500 - £700 range? I'm tall so a large frame is ideal, I like the rake of the Trek but was distinctly unimpressed with the ride, gears and brakes (I was dazzled by the lovely red paint when I test rode it). The bike was only in the shed as the brakes didn't like to be upside down hanging from my garage ceiling!
I ride mostly on dirt tracks with as much technical stuff as I can fit in when you realise I'm towing along the Mrs who falls off at the sight of a log.
