Thule EasyBase 949 - Any Experiences?

Forum collective, I need your advice...
Has anyone got any experience with the Thule EasyBase 949. I already own a car with a tow bar (Fiat Doblo... hey! no sniggering at the back!) and have recently bought a Thule Chinook 2 for the nippers. This takes up a fair bit of space in the car and so need to look at carrying the bikes on the back. I've had a couple of cheap clip on towball carriers but they don't work too well as we have a variety of bike frames and they hang awkwardly on the top tubes.
I saw the Easy Base 949 for half price at my LBS (£79.99). Does anyone know if I could attach a couple of standard roof mounted carriers to it instead of having to buy the EasyBike System. I don't see why not as they would just bolt on in the same way as if they were mounting to a pair of roof bars. Does anyone see an issue here?
Having 7 month old twins and potentially going on camping trips in the summer, it would be really handy to have the versatility of the EasyBase over a specific bike rack.
