Sigma repair service - impressed
Discussion
My eldest son, who is into his photography rather more than I am, noticed that my 'Bigma' was over-exposing for most shots. Easy enough to compensate for, but that's not the point.
Turns out that the aperture blades were moving un-evenly, resulting in some blades sticking a bit and an off-centre (and oversize) aperture
It was a bargain secondhand buy (sub £500 and in perfect condition cosmetically, which is rare for one of these), but I had visions of having to either a) live with the over-exposure b) spend a fortune fixing it or c) buying another.
I sent it off by VERY insured post yesterday afternoon and by mid-day today, I had an acknowledgement of receipt AND an estimate for just £65 to strip, clean and service the iris mechanism, re-assemble the whole lot (presumably without the couple of specks of dust that had managed to get in) and return it to me - estimated turnaround 1 - 2 weeks
Very impressed by the levels of service and the very reasonable cost - well done Sigma!

Good to know!
I've got a Sigma thats suffering from similar sticky iris blades, giving an uneven bokeh - sounds like it's worth sending off.
Would you have any contact details for them?
I logged onto the Sigma support website and filled in a webform - got an email back pretty quickly with details of where to send the lensI've got a Sigma thats suffering from similar sticky iris blades, giving an uneven bokeh - sounds like it's worth sending off.

They were great after I dropped my 120-300mm and it stopped focusing. I happened to be working in the area so to save on postage I took it in myself. They checked it over whilst I waited and were able to give me a written estimate of about £300 to repair it.
I left the lens with them whilst I went to argue with the insurance company and in the end it took about 2 months although that was entirely down to the insurers dragging their feet. As soon as I got clearance Sigma fixed it and got it back to me within a matter of days.

I sent an sd9 dslr back to them years ago as it wouldn't power up. Got an acknowledgment email then nothing for two months despite chasing by email and phone. Eventually having bought a new camera I got put through to an engineer, he asked me what the problem was, diagnosed it in 30 seconds as a faulty battery tray and promised to look one out of the old parts bin. Three days later the camera was back and working fine.
Hmmmm - a little less impressed now....
Turns out that Sigma don't have any parts stock for the 50-500 lens, so they are going to repair the mount, which will be un-warranted, hence the low cost
I'm at the very bottom of a steep learning curve with this photography lark, but I'm wondering what repairing the mount will achieve (unless its a common problem for a faulty mount to affect the iris operation)
Still - as long as it works when I get it back, I'll be happy enough

Interesting. My 50-500 developed a fault where it wouldn't zoom "out" past around 90mm focal length, which among other things meant that it wouldn't fit in the case any more, so I sent it off for repair and had the same very quick response and an estimate of just over £100. I thought about it (after all, I mainly use it on the longer end) and decided to get it done, then sent it off and got a very quick quotation, and the same note about not having any parts available so unwarranted. I asked if they'd reduce the price given that there's no warranty (they'd quoted the standard repair price which included one) and they did, I think I paid just under £100 including return postage. Came back very quickly once I'd given them the go ahead, working as you might expect. Sounds as if they've now started quoting less than the menu price to take into account the lack of warranty, which is good.
I thought the service and comms were great, and I'd probably think the cost more reasonable if I'd bought it new - mine was also very clean indeed, second hand and around the same price as the OP, being a Pentax K-fit though they pop up even less often.
ETA - I was a bit concerned about the lack of spares as I consider it to be quite an expensive lens (cost me more than the camera), but it's apparently been in production for quite a long time so could easily be over ten years old. I thought I'd read something about the mount but I can't see it now.
